TA Instruments is pleased to announce the first in a series of all new online practical scientific training courses. The first course premieres June 1st, 2016.

The inaugural course, A Practical Approach to Thermal Analysis, is focused on the techniques, experiments and data related to differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Designed for both experienced and new users. Attendees will learn the basics of DSC and Modulated DSC (MDSC) measurements, instrument calibration & verification, how to design optimal experimental conditions and tips for presenting great data. “This course will help any scientist get the most out of their investment in a DSC system – any DSC system,” promises Terry Kelly, President of TA Instruments.

All DSC users are invited to attend this free training series and are encouraged to register for the live broadcasts to get the most out of the course. Interactive Q&A sessions will be conducted at the end of each the live event. “We are looking forward to hosting this educational and professional discussion open to thousands of DSC users. We plan to offer additional series in the future to include a wide breadth of topics under thermal analysis, rheology, microcalorimetry and more,” says Ed Moriarty, Director of Worldwide Marketing.

Data AnalysisData analysis hardware and software is available to make data processing straight-forward yet powerful. Data software can be used for math and stats, technical graphing and image analysis. In addition, software is available for specific data analysis of electrophoresis, densitometry, ELISA and DNA sequencing.Chem / BioinformaticsCheminformatics and bioinformatics are computational techniques used in chemistry and biology, respectively, for data acquisition, processing and storage. Cheminformatics focuses on compound information, whereas bioinformatics is mainly applied to analysis and modeling of genomics, genetic and sequencing information. Hardware and software is available for data acquisition, analysis, management and storage.Software PlatformsSoftware platforms are useful for various stages of laboratory experiments from data collection to data storage and processing. For instance lab software is available for system control, data management, data analysis and qualification / validation.Electronic Laboratory NotebooksElectronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs) are becoming increasingly popular for documenting experimental processes and for lab data management. An ELN is informatics software which can be biology specific, chemistry specific, cross-disciplinary or web-based. Advantages of an electronic lab notebook include increased data protection, efficiency and straightforward data searching and sharing.CalorimetryCalorimetry is a technique used to determine the heat released or absorbed in a chemical reaction. Calorimeters can be categorized into bomb calorimeters, constant pressure calorimeters, differential scanning calorimeters, isothermal titration calorimeters, X-ray microcalorimeters, heat-loss calorimeters, and high-energy particle calorimeters. The choice of calorimeter depends on the application.RheometryRheometers are used to measure the rheology of fluids, which is the flow of fluids in response to an applied force. The most common types of rheometer include shear rheometers (capillary, cone and plate and rotational cylinder) and extensional rheometers. Viscometers are similar to rheometers however viscometers only measure the viscosity of a fluid.Thermal Analysis EquipmentThermal analysis equipment is used for measuring heat flow, weight loss, dimension changes or thermomechanical properties and is important for analyzing a material’s performance and stability. Thermal analysis equipment includes differential scanning calorimeters (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzers (TGA), thermomechanical analyzers (TMA), dilatometers, thermometers, vapor sorption analyzers, boiling and melting point apparatus. Thermal analyzers can reveal properties such as melting, crystallization and glass transitions or other processes such as oxidation, decomposition, volatilization, as well as coefficients of thermal expansion and modulus.
