SelectScience Virtual Microbiology & Infectious Disease Summit

Thousands of clinical scientists, clinical researchers, and healthcare professionals from around the world came together online during the SelectScience Microbiology & Infectious Disease Summit earlier this month.

The SelectScience® Virtual Summits offer a crucial platform for the science industry to continue to connect, share knowledge, and provide technology solutions in order to advance science and health at this critical time. The meetings provide a unique opportunity for like-minded professionals to gather regardless of travel restrictions or staffing capacity, enabling more people than ever before to collaborate and share knowledge together.

With a packed agenda of ‘live’ webinar presentations and virtual exhibit booths, this one-day event on 17 May was a huge success. Hundreds of live viewers attended the presentations given by leading doctors and scientists, took part in busy and interactive Q&A sessions with the speakers, and visited the virtual exhibit booths.

Presentations were given on topics including malaria, meningitis, sepsis, and the role of the microbiome in healthcare, from the great minds working at the forefront of healthcare and clinical research. Thousands of people working in all areas of microbiology signed up to attend the Summit and interest was extremely high due to the calibre of the speakers and the hot topics being discussed on the day. The event content also reached over 720,000 people online as word of the activities spread quickly on social media.

Speakers at the Summit included Professor Richard Moxon, emeritus professor of pediatrics at the University of Oxford, Dr. Jane Achan, medical doctor and senior research advisor for the Malaria Consortium, Dr. Anthony Hobson, clinical GI scientist and clinical director of the Functional Gut Clinic, Dr. Ron Daniels, NHS intensive care consultant and founder of the UK Sepsis Trust, Dr. Federica Bernardini, senior postdoctoral researcher at Imperial College London, Dr. Raul Cano from The BioCollective, Sten Westgard, director of client services and technology for Westgard QC, and Dr. Jose Alexander from AdventHealth, Orlando.

A number of manufacturers also presented the latest technologies available, including Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, Sartorius, New England BioLabs, BioEcho Life Sciences, and Molzym. All presentations are now available to view on demand.

Forthcoming SelectScience Virtual Summits include:

  • 19 July 2022: Virtual Cancer and Immunology Summit
  • October 2022: Virtual Food Analysis Summit
  • November 2022: Virtual Biopharmaceuticals Summit

Manufacturers should contact salesteam@selectscience.net today for further information or to book booth space.

MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments. Immunology kits and analysis systems often use techniques such as ELISA, radioimmunoassay (RIA) and immunodiffusion assays, Immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. Immunologists use equipment such as flow Cytometers, plate readers, plate washers and fluorescent microscopes.Point-of-CarePoint-of-Care Testing (POCT) or Near Patient Testing (NPT) products are available for urine, blood and other clinical chemistry analyses. POCT includes: blood glucose testing, blood gas and electrolytes analysis, rapid coagulation testing (PT / INR), rapid cardiac markers diagnostics, drugs of abuse screening, urine strips testing, pregnancy testing, fecal occult blood analysis, food pathogens screening, hemoglobin diagnostics, infectious disease testing and cholesterol screening.Clinical MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses.
