SP Scientific has purchased ControLyo™ Nucleation Technology and all related patents from Praxair Inc.

ControLyo™ nucleation technology controls the freezing stage of the freeze drying process for more consistent and repeatable outcomes that aid drug development, scale-up and production efforts. SP which manufactures a full range of research through production lyophilization equipment and technologies has had a licensing agreement with Praxair, Inc. to provide ControLyo™ technology as part of its portfolio since 2010.

In making the announcement, Bill Downs, President and CEO of SP Scientific noted that moving from licensing to ownership “will allow SP Scientific to work more closely with our customers and leading freeze drying scientists to continually advance the commercial benefits, and drive adoption and integration of ControLyo™ technology with ancillary technologies offered by SP Scientific.”

Products to assist sample preparation include filtration equipment, evaporators, membranes and sieves.Refrigerators Freezers and CryogenicsRefrigerators, Freezers & Cryogenics can be used for preservation or experimental purposes. Types of freezers include deep freeze, -80C°C, ultra-low temperature, explosion proof, cryogenic and controlled rate freezers. Freezing is also used in freeze-drying equipment for dehydration processes. Feature to consider in freezers include temperature control and recorders, failure alarms and self-closing mechanisms.Sample ManagementSample management systems include sample storage devices such as freezers and plate storers, sample environment enclosures and sample organization, retrieval and sorter systems. Useful system features include high-throughput, automation, robotic arms, automated liquid handling and associated database systems. Accessories in sample management include barcode scanners, heat sealers and tubes.Biopharmaceutical AdvancesBiopharmaceutical advances follow the development of pharmaceuticals derived from biotechnology, also known as biotechnology medicines. Biopharmaceuticals may be produced from cell lines, plants, or microbial cells. Important considerations of biopharmaceutical use include application, cost, production process and purification.Robotic InstrumentsRobotic instruments can be used for high-throughput automation of many lab processes. Such processes use instruments for assays like cell based assays and ELISA, for sample preparation like shakers, centrifuges and incubators, and for analysis such as sequencing and western blot analyzers. Useful features of robotic instruments include speed, reproducibility, barcode readers, software and automation.Evaporators and Freeze DryersCentrifugal evaporation is used for solvent removal from a sample. This is a useful technique for sample concentration or sample drying. Many centrifugal evaporators are modular with a central vacuum pump for generating low pressure. Useful features of evaporators or vacuum ovens include minimal solvent bumping, solvent resistance, computer control, temperature regulation and benchtop design.Sample HandlingProper and careful handling of samples is important in scientific studies to ensure the integrity of specimens. This will prevent deterioration and cross contamination, and improve the accuracy of sample tracking procedures.Sample ProcessingSample processing is required to prepare samples prior to analysis. Technologies used for sample processing include homogenizers, grinders, mills and mixers.Drug DevelopmentDrug development refers to the process of bringing a new drug to market.
