Product news

Sionex Corporation, a company focused on commercializing breakthrough chemical and biological sensors and systems, today announced that it will be exhibiting its new microAnalyzer product to interested OEMs at the upcoming ISA 2006 EXPO in Houston, Texas.

Designed for incorporation into OEM end-user products, the Sionex microAnalyzer combines Sionex’s breakthrough patented microDMx™ technology with a miniaturized gas chromatographic module. The microAnalyzer will be available to OEMs for a wide variety of applications including: process control, air monitoring, building monitoring, fenceline monitoring, environmental monitoring and other situations requiring the detection and identification of trace chemicals.

Employing Sionex’s patented microDMx technology, the sub-system offers the superior sensitivity and selectivity associated with the microDMx based products together with the added benefits associated with preconcentration and separation in a complete self contained sub-system requiring no external gases. In many applications, the sub-system will be capable of detecting and identifying chemicals down to parts per trillion (ppt) levels in complex matrices.

“This sub-system is different from our previous component offerings in that the Sionex microAnalyzer represents a complete solution which includes sample collection, sample separation, detection and identification,” said Anthony D. Bashall, Sionex’s VP of marketing and business development. "The microAnalyzer’s unique capabilities have the potential to bring about a paradigm shift in detection systems by enabling the sensing of compounds on an unparalleled scale with unprecedented sensitivity and selectivity.”

Sionex has existing commercial agreements with Varian, Thermo and General Dynamics and anticipates adding additional OEM partners in the process control arena with major vendors. Sionex’s strategy is to form partnerships with major companies that will incorporate Sionex’s microAnalyzer into their end-user products sold into the industrial, military, homeland security, diagnostic, healthcare, food and beverage, and consumer markets.

The microAnalyzer will be exhibited at Sionex’s booth (# 3019) at ISA EXPO 2006 in the Reliant Center, Houston, Texas from Monday, October 16th to the close of the expo on Thursday, October 19th, 2006.

Gas ChromatographyGas chromatography (GC) is an analytical technique used to separate and quantitate mixtures of small and volatile compounds. Gas chromatographs or GC systems include components such as GC columns, detectors, pumps and autosamplers. Choose from packed or capillary GC columns, flame ionization (FID), photoionization (PID) electron capture detectors and selective or non-selective detectors. Biosensor instruments may be photometric, typically using surface plasma resonance (SPR), electrochemical or QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) biosensors. Biosensors should be selective, portable, robust and sensitive and have a fast response time. Systems may be manual or automated and usually have associated software.Medicinal ChemistryMedicinal chemistry is a broad discipline encompassing the design, identification, synthesis and development of chemicals in drug discovery. It includes a number of techniques covering structural biology, synthetic chemistry and molecular biology. Technologies used in medicinal chemistry include ADME, lab-on-a-chip, high content screening and assay assembly.Process ChemistryProcess chemistry is an important stage of drug development for scaling-up drug production or chemical synthesis reactions. It is useful for optimizing economical and efficient drug production. Process chemistry uses reactors and pump systems as well as reagents, standards and buffers.Environmental Monitoring and TestingEnvironmental monitoring and testing uses handheld portable analyzers, kits, spectrometers or chromatography systems for air, water, soil, food and other sample testing. Useful features of analyzers such as BOD and COD include portability, easy calibration, automation and sensitivity.  Environmental test kits for pH, water, moisture, etc, should be accurate, sensitive, reliable, fast and easy to use.Biopharmaceutical AdvancesBiopharmaceutical advances follow the development of pharmaceuticals derived from biotechnology, also known as biotechnology medicines. Biopharmaceuticals may be produced from cell lines, plants, or microbial cells. Important considerations of biopharmaceutical use include application, cost, production process and purification.Particle CharacterizationParticle characterization instruments are used to determine particle size distribution, shape, surface area, zeta potential, density and porosity of particles and materials. Multiple tecchniques are available for determining particle size, shape and count including dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser diffraction, electrozone (Coulter technique), imaging particle analysis and single particle optical sensing. Determine the density of your material with a gas pycnometer or examine its surface area and porosity with gas adsorption analyzers and mercury porosimeters.
