Method validation is critical to adoption of an analytical method, but how does one tackle it for direct mass spectrometry (DMS) techniques? In this webinar (the third in a four-part series), we answer this question in the context of selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS), the leading automated DMS technique for analysis of volatile compounds.

First, we will make a comparison of method development for SIFT-MS and conventional chromatographic techniques. Then, using a detailed case study on headspace analysis of volatiles in water, we will describe how to develop and validate a SIFT-MS method so that the data can be used to support regulatory requirements. This is achieved by applying a strategic approach in accordance with ICH Q2(R1) Guidelines. Finally, a second brief case study describes analysis of BTEX in soil following methanolic extraction. Note that a third case study – analysis of residual formaldehyde analysis in novel drug delivery devices – will be described in the final webinar in the series. The case studies demonstrate the efficient method development and validation (and high sample throughput) achievable using automated SIFT-MS.

Join Dr. Mark Perkins, Senior Applications Chemist at Anatune, and Dr. Vaughan Langford, Principle Scientist at Syft Technologies, to learn more about how SIFT-MS works, how it speeds up analysis, and how it can be validated successfully in accordance with ICH Q2(R1) Guidelines suitable for pharmaceutical applications such as regulatory submissions where GMP compliance is essential.

Mass SpectrometryMass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify molecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio of gas-phase ions. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. GC-MS GC-MS (gas chromatography-mass spectrometry) instruments and equipment are used to separate, quantify and identify mixtures of small and volatile compounds, such as polycyclic aromatics, fatty acids and alcohols. Often used in drug detection, forensic investigation and environmental analysis for pesticides and contaminants, GC-MS is a powerful addition to your lab’s analytical capabilities. GC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzers can give greater sensitivity and resolution to your analysis. LIMS can be a standard for common lab workflows, such as commercial off the shelf systems (COTS), or customized for more specialized lab use. Systems are available for mainframe computers or PC.GC-MSGas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) combines the separation power of gas chromatography with the detection capabilities of mass spectrometry, allowing for the analysis of complex mixtures.
