Product news

Tecan, one of the world’s leading players in the growing life sciences industry, will be demonstrating its full range of products for genomics, proteomics and drug discovery applications at Biotechnica 2007 in hall 9 stand F62.

Tecan’s liquid handling and sample management display will include several instruments from the Freedom EVO® family of versatile, automated liquid handling workstations, featuring a number of innovative, application-specific features. Come and see automated, high throughput transfection of primary cells and difficult-to-transfect cell lines using the Freedom EVO 100 with a fully integrated amaxa Nucleofector® 96-well Shuttle® System. The Freedom EVO 150 has been integrated with a Te-Stack module and GE Healthcare’s new 96-well format MultiTrap™ for protein purification, simplifying screening and small-scale purification. Tecan’s new 7+1 liquid handling (LiHa) arm will be demonstrated on the small footprint Freedom EVO 75 workstation, and an automated, IVD-D compliant nucleic acid testing (NAT) platform will also be on show, consisting of a Freedom EVO 75 configured with a robotic manipulator (RoMa) arm, and Te-VacS vacuum separation and Te-MagS magnetic bead separation modules.

Sample management systems from REMP, a Tecan Group company, will be exhibited at the stand, including the Automated Capper/Decapper (ACD96™) device for capping/decapping 96-format tubes, and the eight-position Manual Capper/Decapper (MCD8™) device. The REMP Tube Technology™ Consumables are designed to minimize freeze-thaw cycles and maintain sample integrity and quality, see for yourself why they are used by the majority of the world’s largest pharmaceutical and agrochemical companies.

A range of Tecan’s fully automated microarray processing instruments, including the HS Pro™ hybridization station and the LS Reloaded™ laser scanner system, will be available. The Infinite™ F500, Tecan’s highly sensitive and extremely fast filter-based detection system, and the Infinite 200 series of flexible, upgradeable multi-mode microplate readers will also be on show, with the multi-purpose Safire2 microplate reader. The HydroFlex™ 3-in-1 platform for automated vacuum filtration, magnetic bead separation and microplate washing, and the popular Sunrise™ microplate reader are now available in bold and fresh new colors. See the red HydroFlex platform and the blue Sunrise, or enquire about the green and orange models.

A range of OEM components from Tecan’s top quality Cavro® brand will also be displayed, including the high precision syringes, a variety of syringe pumps, and custom-configurable robotics components.

Genome AnalysisGenomics, the study of genomes, includes functional genomics, evolutionary genomics and comparative genomics. There are many genomic technologies such as DNA sequencing of whole genomes, computational biology and bioinformatics. DNA and nucleic acids must be isolated and concentrated from cells for analysis with kits, automated analyzers and software. Other useful technologies for studying genomics include PCR, microarrays and electrophoresis.ProteomicsProteomics is the systemic bioinformatics study of proteins and amino acids, including their structure, size, function and identification. Tools used in proteomics include chromatography, blotting and gels, protein arrays, mass spectrometry and ELISA and associated analysis software. Analyzers and proteomic systems should be sensitive, high resolution, fast and may be automated for high-throughput.Microplate Readers / DetectorsMicroplate readers are used to automate the detection and analysis of labeled or label-free components in microplates during assays or live-cell monitoring. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. This can reveal information on protein or gene expression, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), copy number variation (CNV), epigenetics and patient health in clinical diagnostic tests.
