Sartorius Stedim Biotech (SSB), an international leading supplier for the biopharmaceutical industry, announces the launch of SARTOFLOW® Smart, the smart and easy benchtop crossflow system for optimized ultra- and diafiltration applications.

It can ideally be used in many downstream processes, such as purification of vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins. The system is suitable for flexible use in laboratory environments for process development and clinical trials as well as for cGMP environments.

The brand new system is equipped with a low shear 4-piston membrane pump that enables highest product yields to be achieved. In addition, the pump provides a wide range of flow rates allowing to choose between membrane surface areas from 50 cm² to as much as 0.14 m².

The crossflow system is supplied with SSB’s intuitive and easy to use DCU-4 control unit, which, when combined with the company’s BioPAT® SCADA, MFCS-4 software, provides data logging and export. Its touchscreen offers instant access to all critical process parameters and displays control and alarm functions. A logbook function stores alarms, set points and user logs.

The SARTOFLOW® family of crossflow systems share a unique operation design with a 7” touchscreen that supports the operator with interactive prompts for easy guidance through entire process sequences. Users can select predefined parameters to automatically run sequences for concentration, diafiltration, rinsing, filling, draining, flushing steps and tare functions.

An optional peristaltic diafiltration pump is available to load product or buffer as a discrete process step. Furthermore, several options are available to customize the system according to specific requirements. For example, a conductivity, pH or temperature probe can be installed in the recirculation vessel. The system can also be upgraded in the case of changing process requirements.

“SARTOFLOW® Smart is a milestone development in the landscape of small crossflow systems. It combines outstanding technology with options that are normally only available with process systems. With an exceptionally wide working range of membrane surface areas, the system is the perfect tool for both R&D optimization trials and cGMP production,” stated Dr. Marc Jenke, expert for benchtop crossflow filtration systems at Sartorius Stedim Biotech.

SARTOFLOW® Advanced crossflow filtration systems

Sartorius Group

Full flexibility and outstanding crossflow filtration performance combined The SARTOFLOW® Advanced is a modular benchtop crossflow system optimized for ultrafiltration, microfiltration and diafiltration applications used in many downstream processes, such as purification of vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and recombinant proteins. The system is suitable for flexible use in laboratory environments for process development and clinical trials as well as for small-scale production batches. Several standardized options are available to enable you to obtain just the right system exactly tailored to meet your individual requirements. The system can also be upgraded with additional options if your requirements change during process development or production. This Crossflow system is equipped with our proven DCU-4 control unit that readily communicates with Sartorius’ BioPAT® SCADA, MFCS software. The SARTOFLOW® Advanced can be configured to accept either Sartocon® Slice or full-sized Sartocon® cassettes. As a result, this gives you an exceptionally wide range of membrane surface areas. Since all Sartocon® crossflow cassettes have the same hydrodynamic flow path length, the SARTOFLOW® Advanced can be linearly scaled up from 0.1 to 2.1 m2 of membrane area. Its unique compact design has an ultra-low loop volume of ~200 ml, making it possible to concentrate even small process batches. The SARTOFLOW® Advanced can be run in demanding production environments. Moreover, the unit and its touch screen is built to withstand continuous use in both under laboratory and production conditions.
