Product news

Sage Science, a developer of life science products for improving sample preparation processes in molecular biology applications, today announced the launch of Pippin Link and Pippin Pulse, two new products designed to streamline library prep workflow and enhance the utility of the Pippin line of automated DNA size selection products.

The Pippin Link is an accessory for the Pippin Prep and BluePippin that lets users boost throughput by connecting up to eight instruments and controlling them from a single computer. This streamlines workflow and conserves bench space. The Pippin Pulse is a pulsed-field electrophoresis power supply for analytical gels. Based on the power supply of the BluePippin, Pippin Pulse is an affordable tool that lets researchers resolve DNA to 100 Kb and beyond. It uses a simple software interface that provides users full flexibility in developing their field-inversion protocols.

“The trend we have seen is that scientists are buying multiple Pippin size selection instruments for their labs, so we developed the Pippin Link specifically for those customers to keep the process as simple and hands-off as possible,” said Chris Boles, Chief Scientific Officer of Sage Science. “Our other new release, Pippin Pulse, was designed for researchers who are trying to resolve very large DNA fragments and are looking for a low-cost, straightforward solution.”

Independent studies of size selection methods have repeatedly demonstrated that the Pippin platform offers unparalleled reproducibility, accuracy, and sample recovery. Precise size selection is critical for optimizing sequencing efficiency, improving genome assemblies, and reducing project costs.

“With the launch of these products, we’re pleased to be adding even more flexibility and multiplexing options for our customers,” said Alex Vira, Director of Marketing for Sage Science. “Precise size selection is a fundamental element for a successful sequencing project, and these new tools will improve researchers’ ability to get the best results with a more efficient workflow.”

BluePippin Size Selection System

Sage Science

The BluePippin is a preparative electrophoresis platform for collection of size-selected DNA or protein samples. The system automates DNA or protein size selection using disposable, pre-cast agarose cassettes to extract fractions according to user-defined software input. Samples are electro-eluted from agarose and collected in buffer. The platform is used for the construction of next-gen sequencing libraries, or upstream of protein mass-spec. For DNA applications, the BluePippin features pulsed-field electrophoresis to collect high molecular weight targets, and can collect fragments (depending on gel type) between 90 bp- 50kb. For protein, the system uses SDS-agarose to collect targets between 18-200kDa. In both cases, a higher quality of sample is extracted, and more reproducibly, when compared to manual gel purification methods.

Pippin Link Group Controller

Sage Science

The Pippin Link Group Control is the best way to reproducibly provide the highest quality size-selected DNA in high-throughput. It provides hardware and software for running up to eight Pippin Instruments from a laptop PC. Three linked-Pippins can produce up to 96 size selections in one day.

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners.
