In this webinar, Dr. Noelle Anastasio, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Texas Medical Branch; and Sarah Swinford-Jackson, Graduate Assistant, Center for Addiction Research, University of Texas Medical Branch; will discuss how alterations in the serotonin and glutamate neurotransmitter receptor systems affect cocaine use disorder.Cocaine use disorder is characterized by chronic cycles of abstinence and relapse. Prevention and treatment of cocaine use disorder could be greatly advanced by a more comprehensive understanding of its neurobiological underpinnings. Alterations in the serotonin and glutamate neurotransmitter receptor systems in the brain are putative molecular mechanisms, which may be involved in the propensity to relapse to cocaine use.

Topics covered will include:

  • Validation of commercially available antibodies in vitro and ex vivo for serotonin receptors using Protein Simples’ Wes™ system
  • Interrogation of serotonin receptor expression in preclinical models of cocaine use disorder
  • Investigation of glutamate receptor expression in preclinical models of cocaine use disorder
  • Exploration of serotonin receptor and glutamate receptor protein:protein interactions

The Q&A session during the webinar will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have on the research and methods discussed.

The webinar will take place at 08:00 PDT / 11:00 EDT / 16:00 BST / 17:00 CEST, July 21st 2015, and if you are unable to attend the live event, it will be available on-demand.

AntibodiesAntibodies are used in techniques such as confocal and fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISPOT, immunohistochemistry, western blotting and immunopreciptation. Select specific antigen reactivity, high specific affinity, low non-specific binding, monoclonal or polyclonal, primary or secondary antibodies and associated conjugates such as an enzyme or dye for visualization.Western BlottingWestern blotting equipment is used to transfer and identify specific proteins within a sample, reveal protein modifications, as well as give a semi-quantitative estimation of their concentration. Western blotting equipment includes all apparatus necessary to transfer proteins from gel to membrane and subsequent processing steps. Protein transfer can be performed by electroblotting with wet, semi-dry and dry transfer systems onto nitrocellulose and PVDF membranes. Blocking, washing and labeling of membranes follows, involving buffers, blocking reagents, blotting / incubation trays, labeling reagents, immunoblotting assays, antibodies and conjugates. Automated equipment for these steps is available to accelerate your lab workflow. Finally, detection and imaging of proteins can be conducted using gel documentation and imaging systems.
