ALcontrol Laboratories have been granted UKAS accreditation for new Salmonella and Listeria methods using the VIDAS technology.

VIDAS provides all the speed and advantages of our routine ELISA methods but unlike ELISA methods this rapid procedure has been approved by M&S so offers an alternative to the slower, cultural methods. VIDAS will provide a negative result at least 24 hours earlier than the cultural methods specified by M&S.

VIDAS is a multi-parameter automated immunoanalyser. It comprises an analytical module, a computer and a printer. The analytical module automatically performs all stages of the analysis, including printing out the full results leaving little room for human error.

Thelma Hooper, Group Technical Microbiology Manager, commented “Customers will find that Vidas is an added choice of method whilst retaining compliance with M&S requirements. After 2 days, the Vidas system will screen out negatives, and give an indication as to the presence of Listeria monocytogenes and other Listeria spp (subject to confirmation). Even including the confirmation, the method takes no longer than standard culture. This is invaluable where a rapid result is needed, allowing product to be released with confidence.”

ELISAEnzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), also known as enzyme immunoassays (EIA), are used for the detection and quantification of proteins, peptides and antibodies in a sample. ELISA often comes in kit format, with pre-selected antibody pairs to detect specific proteins or biomarkers of diseases such as diabetes and obesity, or cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Detection is made possible with chemiluminescent, fluorescent or colorimetric substrates and detection instruments such as microplate / ELISA readers. Other kits available include: Enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays for the quantification of protein-producing cells and chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA) kits. Data software can be used for math and stats, technical graphing and image analysis. In addition, software is available for specific data analysis of electrophoresis, densitometry, ELISA and DNA sequencing.MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments.
