On display from Viscotek at the recent Pittcon 2006 exhibition was a technical poster previewing a new High Throughput Dynamic Light Scattering (HTDLS) instrument to be launched later this year.

Designed without compromise the new HTDLS instrument combines the productivity advantages of a DLS plate reading system with the unique and proven benefits of Viscotek's patented single mode fibre technology including unmatched sensitivity and ultra low sample volumes. Achieving market-leading performance, the HTDLS cuts down measurement times to c. 1 minute per sample well.

Comprising state-of-the-art instrument with a new 3-axis automated platform the HTDLS has been designed to accommodate any style of SBS footprint microplate (48, 96, 384 and 1536-well). The new HTDLS instrument includes a temperature controlled sample cell to improve analytical precision and cooled microplate holder to preserve sample stability. For seamless integration with robotic handling systems, Viscotek's intuitive OmniSize software accepts assay control data to enable automation of entire experiments.

Founded in 1985, Viscotek is the global leader in GPC / SEC detectors, software and systems for the characterisation of polymers, proteins and nanoparticles. Launched in 2005 Viscotek's innovative Model 802 DLS instrument has been widely acclaimed by laboratories around the world particularly those specialising in biomolecular discovery, development and delivery, protein-protein interactions, protein conformation analysis and measurement of the stability and size of lipids and conjugates.

Malvern Instruments acquired Viscotek in January 2008.

Size Exclusion ChromatographySize exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a liquid chromatographic technique used to separate and identify molecules based on their size, including polymers, proteins, nanoparticles & nucleic acid. SEC is further subdivided into gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) when an aqueous or organic mobile phase is used respectively. HPLC-based SEC systems and columns are available for analytical separation alongside SEC spin columns or filters to prep samples for many protocols. The number of wells microplates contain can range from 6 to 3243 wells, with the 96-well format being the most commonly used. Microplates can come tailored for a range of applications including cell culture, PCR, filtration, storage, non-binding surface, protein crystallization, as well as pre-coated, deep well and normal Standard microplates. Additionally, options for microplate colors include clear , black, white or black with clear bottom and white with clear bottom for absorbance microplate reader applications. Tools used in proteomics include chromatography, blotting and gels, protein arrays, mass spectrometry and ELISA and associated analysis software. Analyzers and proteomic systems should be sensitive, high resolution, fast and may be automated for high-throughput.Microplate Readers / DetectorsMicroplate readers are used to automate the detection and analysis of labeled or label-free components in microplates during assays or live-cell monitoring. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput.
