ORFLO Technologies announced the international launch of Moxi™ Z, the life science industry's first hands-free mini automated cell counter at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting in Orlando.

"The Moxi Z mini cell counter sets a new bar for the cell counting community," said Manju Sethi, Vice President of Business Development, "The instrument eliminates virtually all of the drawbacks of current cell counting methods."

Today, cell counting is often performed by using hemocytometers that involve laborious manual counting or by using large, imprecise image-based counting systems. When more accurate data is needed, scientists turn to flow cytometers that can be very costly. Moxi Z combines two powerful methods, the Coulter Principle which is the gold standard for cell counting and a patented thin-film sensor technology developed by ORFLO. This unique instrument has the performance of high-end instruments yet is miniaturized, affordable and simple to operate without the need for costly reagents or maintenance contracts.

In just 8 seconds per measurement, the instrument provides accurate cell size and count determinations and an indicator of dead versus live cells with its Moxi Viability Index - an important criterion for scientists who are analyzing cell cultures. The Moxi Z is the first portable instrument to provide cell viability without the use of reagents or dyes. Moxi Z's disposable cassettes offer superior ease of use and cost effectiveness with two tests per cassette.

"Cell science is evolving rapidly today, and Moxi z plays a revolutionary role in optimizing the scientist's toolkit to quickly and affordably answer many of the quantitative and qualitative questions that scientists ask themselves about their cell cultures," summarizes Ted Ayliffe, ORFLO founder and CEO.

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. High-quality cells, optimized for your applications, alongside optimized cell substrates, growth medium and supplements, are critical for experimental success. Explore a range of cells suitable for your applications, including isogenic cell lines, competent cells, induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived cell lines, fungal/bacterial/mammalian cell lines, stem cells and cancer cell lines. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. Other cell analysis equipment includes image cytometers, cell counters, fluorescence-activated cell sorters (FACS), magnetic-activated cell sorters (MACS), and a range of flow cytometry assay kits. Flow cytometers can reveal information on cell viability, cell proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle progression, as well as identify cell populations and intracellular or cell-surface molecules. Additionally, some flow cytometers, known as FACS, have an additional sorting function after analysis. Cell counters and image cytometers count live and dead cell populations and can also conduct cell proliferation assays. The use of biomarkers in research and diagnosis can indicate a normal or disease state or drug response of cells / tissues. Biomarkers include genetic markers, cell surface markers such as antigens, antibodies or receptors and secreted molecules such as cytokines. An assay system is required for identification of biomarkers. :Automation Supplies / AccessoriesAutomated accessories and consumables make lab processes fast, efficient and reliable.
