Residual solvents are volatile chemicals used in the manufacturing of cannabinoid products for use in medicinal or adult recreational programs, in U.S. states or other countries where such usage has been legalized. Terpenes are synthesized by the plants and engender the characteristic aroma of cannabis and hemp. The analysis of residual solvents in these products is a matter of safety to ensure their concentrations do not exceed regulated levels. On the other hand, unless there is a specific product label claim, terpene analyses are typically a quality test that provides a chemical profile of the product.

Agilent Technologies has developed and fully vetted a novel approach for these analyses built around the Agilent Intuvo 9000 GC. This single instrument system provides both headspace and liquid injection analysis, making testing as simple as loading the samples and clicking “Run”.
