The serious consequences presented by a potential pandemic of the influenza A virus subtype Asia H5N1 highlight the need for a rapid and sensitive epidemiological test.

In November 2005, Roche Diagnostics, and TIB Molbiol (Berlin, Germany) announced the availability of a test system for the detection of H5N1 virus, using Roche Diagnostics' LightCycler® real-time PCR systems, combined with parameter-specific reagents (LightMix reagent) from TIB Molbiol. Roche Diagnostics has now launched a website that offers detailed information. At www.roche-applied-science.com/sis/avian, Roche is presenting information on Avian flu, on the new real-time PCR test system, and on the LightCycler® System´s technology.

Unlike other methods, the real-time PCR method allows researchers to detect genetic material of the H5N1 virus instead of proteins (antibodies), which are identified by many of the currently used immunological tests. The test is designed for research applications, for example in the field of epidemiological studies.

"The new Avain Flu website aims to provide researchers the information they need for the selection of an appropriate test system to monitor the development of a potential bird flu pandemic. The results of our test could enable authorities to obtain earlier the information needed to start the respective countermeasures," commented Manfred Baier, Head of Roche Applied Science.
