BioTek Instruments Inc., today unveiled the world’s first true multi-detection system capable of performing an unlimited number of microplate-based assays – the new patent-pending Synergy™ 4 Multi-Detection Microplate Reader.

The Synergy 4 is the first multi-mode reader that combines both filter-based and quadruple monochromator-based fluorescence detection technology. In addition, Synergy 4 includes Fluorescence Intensity, Luminescence, Fluorescence Polarization, Time-Resolved Fluorescence, and UV-Visible Absorbance for endless flexibility in current and future microplate-based assay choice.

Filter-based fluorescence technology provides optimal light filtering and purification for the best sensitivity. The inherent design of filter systems also provides fast wavelength switching and higher read speeds. On the other hand, the quadruple monochromator-based fluorescence technology offers flexible wavelength selection, true spectral scanning, reduced background noise and increased convenience. The combination of the filter and monochromator systems in one unit means that microplate assay choice is no longer restricted by the technology of the microplate reader.

“The pace of research in life science laboratories demands more flexibility in detection methods. Our goal was to design a multi-detection microplate reader that combines the best of filter-based and monochromator-based fluorescence systems to fulfill the true promise of multi-detection,” stated Michael Kontorovich, Vice President of Engineering at BioTek Instruments, when commenting on the design of the Synergy 4. “By achieving this goal, our customers can now benefit from increased flexibility and true multi-detection in one compact footprint, and as their assay requirements change, the Synergy 4 will seamlessly support their evolution.”

Peter Weith, Vice President of Marketing & Sales at BioTek Instruments agreed, adding, “The versatility offered by the new Synergy 4 exemplifies our depth of strength in creating greater production efficiencies for our customers through our resourceful and reliable microplate solutions.”

Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput.
