Phenomenex Inc., a global leader in the research, design and manufacture of advanced technologies for the separation sciences, introduces the Presston™ 100 Positive Pressure Manifold for sample preparation. An alternative to the vacuum manifold, Presston™ 100 applies pressure from above to pass liquids through the sample preparation products. Presston™ 100 reduces the inconsistent pressures that are inherent in vacuum techniques, and its high-pressure capability enables the separation of viscous samples.

Presston™ 100 is unique in that a single unit can prepare samples in tubes or 96-well plates. Other manufacturers’ manifolds require a separate unit for each format. Phenomenex offers a simple tube adapter kit for Presston that converts between tubes and 96-well plates.

“Phenomenex offers so many sample preparation solutions that it makes sense to provide a manifold that can process them efficiently,” said Erica Safan, brand manager for Phenomenex. “The ability to handle tubes or plates along with the other advantages of positive pressure allow the user to do more with just one instrument.”

Presston™ 100 is compatible with Phenomenex Strata® solid phase extraction (SPE), Novum™ simplified liquid extraction (SLE), Phree™ phospholipid removal, Impact™ protein precipitation plates, β-Gone™ β-glucuronidase removal and Clarity® synthetic DNA and RNA biosolutions.

Phenomenex is a global technology leader committed to developing novel analytical chemistry solutions that solve the separation and purification challenges of researchers in industrial, clinical research, government and academic laboratories. From drug discovery and pharmaceutical development to food safety and environmental analysis, Phenomenex chromatography solutions accelerate science and help researchers improve global health and well-being.

Products to assist sample preparation include filtration equipment, evaporators, membranes and sieves.OligonucleotidesOligonucleotides are small nucleic acid polymers, usually less than 20 bases in length. Oligonucleotides can be made via enzymatic cleavage or more commonly by chemical synthesis with polymerases. Their use includes FISH, southern blots, microarrays and as primers in PCR. High fidelity synthesis kits and detection systems are available for easy production and detection, respectively.ProteomicsProteomics is the systemic bioinformatics study of proteins and amino acids, including their structure, size, function and identification. Tools used in proteomics include chromatography, blotting and gels, protein arrays, mass spectrometry and ELISA and associated analysis software. Analyzers and proteomic systems should be sensitive, high resolution, fast and may be automated for high-throughput.Preparative ChromatographyPreparative chromatography equipment is used for purification purposes, separating and collecting compounds eluted from a mixture which can then be subsequently used for further purposes. This can be done in large quantities or small. Preparative chromatography systems are usually low to medium pressure liquid chromatographs that are semi-automated. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats. This parallelization reduces the cost per experiment and increases reproducibility and output volume of data.Solid Phase Extraction (SPE)Solid phase extraction (SPE) is a sample preparation technique used to separate and concentrate analytes from complex mixtures. It is widely used in environmental, pharmaceutical, and clinical analysis. SPE provides higher sensitivity and selectivity compared to traditional liquid-liquid extraction methods, making it essential for accurate and reproducible results. Some of the most commonly used techniques in protein analysis include Western blotting, electrophoresis and mass spectrometry.ChromatographyChromatography is a powerful technique used to separate and analyze components of mixtures based on their chemical properties. It is widely used in fields like biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, and environmental analysis. By exploiting differences in the interaction of substances with a stationary phase and a mobile phase, chromatography enables precise purification and quantification of compounds.
