New Online Presentation on Working Safely in your Biological Safety Cabinet

Laboratory equipment manufacturer, NuAire has released a new educational online presentation and DVD, which illustrates the best use of safety cabinets in the laboratory. The 7-step seminar, with video, aims to inform technicians, researchers, scientists and certifiers of the best working skills to minimize air disruptions and optimize results. Ergonomic advancements that encourage improved safety in the work place are discussed, as well as protocols on biological safety cabinet certification, based on NSF/ASNI standard 49, and the prevention of contamination.

The 7-step program is outlined below:
Chapter 1: Introduction: Learn the basics of how Biological Safety Cabinets are designed to offer optimal personnel, environmental and product protection.
Chapter 2: Understanding the Biosafety Cabinet: Biological Safety Cabinets were designed to remove or minimize exposures to hazardous biological materials and hazardous particulates. It is the principal device used to provide containment of infectious splashes or aerosols generated by microbiological procedures.
Chapter 3: Proper Preparation: Learn about the measures to take to prepare you for work in your Biological Safety Cabinet. A proper biosafety or operations manuals will specify practices and procedures designed to minimize and eliminate risks.
Chapter 4: Using Proper Procedures and Techniques: The use of proper procedures and equipment cannot be overemphasized in providing primary personnel and environmental protection. The Biological Safety Cabinet is not a substitute for good laboratory practice and proper aseptic technique.
Chapter 5: Working in your Biosafety Cabinet: Proper techniques when working within the biological safety cabinet will minimize air turbulence and prevent splatter or unwanted spread of aerosols.
Chapter 5a: Experience Ergonomics: An important part of a safe work environment is making sure it is ergonomically designed to work with you, not against you.
Chapter 6: When Work is Completed: Proper protocols must be followed to decontaminate the biosafety cabinet to avoid potential contamination risks once work has been completed.
Chapter 7: Maintenance & Certification: Proper preventative maintenance, yearly maintenance, and certification are needed to maximize your product’s life as well as keeping up-to-date with industry standards to eliminate safety hazards.
