Parallel precision positioning specialist PI (Physik Instrumente) recently added a new building with more production floors, metrology labs and R&D office space to its factory in Karlsruhe, Germany.

New High-Load Hexapod Production & Test Facility
Close to 4500 square ft are dedicated for the manufacture and test of heavy duty 6-Axis motion systems capable of moving loads of up to 5 tons with sub-micrometer precision To verify the accuracy of these high-load precision positioners, special metrology rooms are available, filled with interferometers and other test equipment.

A giant lift and rotation platform is used to rotate the 6 axis positioning positioner with its load by 360 degrees to verify the performance under the exact mounting conditions of the customer’s site.

PI is the leading manufacturer of micro-precision and nano-precision hexapods and parallel positioning systems in the world. For example, 50 of PI's hexapods align reflectors in the ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) observatory, the world's most advanced telescope located in Chile.

Hexapod precision positioning systems are used in many cutting edge applications around the world, from optics alignment, to medical tumor treatment, from high energy physics to aerospace and semiconductor manufacturing.

Applications of nanotechnology include medicine and medical devices, electronics, air and water purification, food science and energy production.Mechanical TestingMechanical testing explores the elastic and inelastic nature of a material when force is applied. A mechanical test shows whether a material is suitable for its intended application by measuring hardness, tensile strength, elongation, elasticity, and fatigue limit.Light MicroscopyLight microscopes or optical microscopes are used to visualize microscale objects under magnification, including cells, clinical specimens and materials. Lab equipment for light microscopy includes confocal microscopes, fluorescence microscopes, zoom and stereo microscopes. Microscope slides and imaging reagents are available for visualizing samples, as well as various microscope stages and incubators for large or temperature-sensitive samples. Instruments can generate an image of the surface topology, manipulate objects and reveal information on localized properties such as Young’s modulus, conductivity, and magnetism. High-quality STM and AFM probes optimized for your application are available, as well as other SPM-based instruments such as scanning ion conductance microscopes (SICM) & near-field scanning optical microscopes (NSOM).
