Product news

BioTek recently announced the new Epoch™ 2 Microplate Spectrophotometer. Epoch 2 is the first reader to combine a large touchscreen and full onboard data analysis software for simplified and efficient operation and reporting of absorbance-based detection workflows.

The 10-inch color touch screen interface offers an enhanced user experience, with intuitive navigation and a high resolution display. On-board Gen5™ Data Analysis Software provides quick analysis and flexible export and report options at the touch of a few buttons. Data export is expanded via WiFi, Bluetooth® and USB flash drive.

To further maximize versatility, Epoch 2 features a spectral range from 200 to 999 nm, selectable in 1 nm increments for single, dual and multi-wavelength measurements in endpoint and kinetic read methods; and also offers spectral scanning and well area scanning. Compatible sample vessels include 6- to 384-well microplates, standard cuvettes and 2 μL micro-volume samples via BioTek's Take3™ Micro-Volume Plates. Standard linear, orbital and double orbital shaking, and precise 4-Zone™ temperature control to 65 °C are ideal for cell-based assays. Throughput may be increased by interfacing with BioTek's BioStack™ Microplate Stacker or third-party automation.

UV-Visible SpectroscopyUltraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometers are used to measure the interaction of UV and visible light with a sample, including transmission, reflectance & absorbance. The two major instrument classes are single-beam or double-beam spectrophotometers. More specialized equipment includes colorimeters, spectroradiometers and refractometers. Portable and microvolume spectrophotometers are also available. For the modular spectroscopy lab, explore a range of light sources for combination with a spectrograph/spectrometer and optics. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. UVUltraviolet (UV) light is used in a variety of applications, including disinfection, spectrophotometry, and molecular biology. UV light can damage DNA, making it a powerful tool in sterilization and in studies of mutagenesis and gene repair.
