The new ASSIST autosampler from SEBIA is designed to ensure standardisation of all pre-analytical steps for automated sample preparation for gel electrophoresis. ASSIST works in conjunction with SEBIA’s HYDRASYS 2 instrument and data acquisition software PHORESIS to provide full automation and positive sample identification.

Developed to address the needs of clinical diagnostic laboratories, this innovative autosampler eliminates manual pipetting with direct sampling from primary tubes. Featuring a barcode management system for positive identification of primary sample tubes, the autosampler also provides automatic dispensing of antisera for immunofixation. Programming the ASSIST is very easy, allowing either standard or customised sample dilutions to be performed. This is particularly useful with immunofixation and CSF techniques. ASSIST’s automated sampling capability streamlines laboratory workflow and maximises biohazard safety. In addition, the autosampler boasts loading and storage capacity of up to four applicators for a processing cycle of 60 electrophoresis or 9 immunofixation samples.

B. ADELUS, CEO of SEBIA, commented: “We are very pleased with the ongoing expansion of our agarose gel electrophoresis range. Designed to complement the proven technology of HYDRASYS, ASSIST offers enhanced accuracy and time efficiencies, enabling clinical laboratory personnel to concentrate on more demanding tasks.” He added: “Our R&D experts have developed a system that eliminates the risk of evaporation while maximising safety and throughput of sample preparation and antisera pipetting. ASSIST allows users to get results directly from primary sample tubes.”

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners.
