Product news

Retsch’s mixer mill MM 400 is a true multi-purpose mill in the lab: it is used for mixing and homogenizing powders and suspensions within seconds and is also ideally suited for the disruption of biological cells as well as DNA/RNA and protein recovery.

A new adapter now allows for simultaneous cell disruption of up to 8 x 30 ml cell suspension in 50 ml Falcon tubes with glass beads. The oscillation frequency of the mill of up to 30 Hz and the process time can be individually adjusted according to application requirements. Depending on the type of cell (yeast, bacteria, microalgae, filamentous fungi) this method is greatly superior to manual procedures as it allows to reproducibly disrupt up to 240 ml of cell suspension within 20 seconds to 7 minutes without noticeable temperature increase. Another new adapter for 4 x 30 ml wide mouth bottles allows for processing up to 8 samples for applications like washing bacteria off tissue samples.

The adapter for 5 ml Eppendorf tubes is used for the homogenization of cell suspensions, tough secretions or tissue pieces with a volume up to 3 ml (incl. buffer) in single-use tubes in one working run, i. e. without previous division of the sample. The adapter accommodates 5 Eppendorf tubes and two adapters can be clamped into the mill; hence, it is possible to simultaneously process 10 x 3 ml of sample material.

This highly flexible mixer mill is also used for the homogenization of plants, soft cell tissue but also of harder sample materials.

Benefits at a glance:

  • Reproducible, efficient size reduction, mixing and homogenizing within seconds
  • Grinding in dry, wet and cryogenic mode possible
  • Screw-top grinding jars ensure loss-free processing
  • Memory for 9 Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)

Cell / Tissue CultureCell culture or tissue culture is used to study the biology of cells or tissues and to isolate cellular products in an environment which can be manipulated and well defined. Accurately control your culture environment with bioreactors or culture incubators, bind your cells to a surface or together with an extracellular matrix. Distinguish cell types with differential media or proliferate cells with certain characteristics using selective media. Enrich your media with supplements such as growth factors, sera and vitamins. Find the best cell and tissue culture products, kits and equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Genome AnalysisGenomics, the study of genomes, includes functional genomics, evolutionary genomics and comparative genomics. There are many genomic technologies such as DNA sequencing of whole genomes, computational biology and bioinformatics. DNA and nucleic acids must be isolated and concentrated from cells for analysis with kits, automated analyzers and software. Other useful technologies for studying genomics include PCR, microarrays and electrophoresis.MicrobiologyMicrobiology is the study of microorganisms including protists, prokaryotes, fungi, and, often, viruses. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments. Consequently, the importance of high-quality DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment cannot be underestimated. Many purification kits are available and are typically optimized for nucleic acid type and source, including plasmid DNA, genomic DNA, mRNA, RNA and viral nucleic acid purification kits. Automated extraction and purification of nucleic acids can be implemented with magnetic bead separator instruments or high-throughput purification workstations. Lab equipment for sample homogenization includes handheld and benchtop homogenizers, bead mill, ultrasonic and multiple sample homogenizers, high shear homogenizers and blenders. Homogenizer bead and probe multipacks are available to avoid cross contamination of samples, as well as cooling systems for homogenizing temperature-sensitive samples. Homogenizers are often used in the first step of extraction of DNA, RNA and proteins from tissue and cell samples.
