Millipore and VigeneTech Introduce New Multiplex Data Analysis Software

7 Sept 2008

Product news

Millipore Corporation, a Life Science leader providing technologies, tools and services for bioscience research and biopharmaceutical manufacturing, and VigeneTech, today announced the launch of the powerful MILLIPLEX™ Analyst software. This customized OEM software made from VigeneTech is the only data analysis package that is seamlessly integrated with Luminex xPONENT software, the system that controls Luminex multiplexed bioassay instruments.

Today’s fast pace of drug discovery and protein research has required researchers to greatly increase the scale of protein detection assays. Slower individual protein detection methods, such as ELISA or Western blotting, have been replaced by a sequencing approach that uses several pooled samples simultaneously. “Multiplexing” is now virtually universal in the drug discovery industry, and the Luminex system is one of the most commonly used platforms.

MILLIPLEX Analyst, developed exclusively for Millipore by VigeneTech, Inc., allows users to analyze multiplex data with accuracy, speed and efficiency. Data sets can be easily extracted from acquisition or imported as Excel or text. The software’s unique algorithms and analytics allow robust processing of even the most challenging data sets in seconds, with multiple output format options for maximum flexibility.

Along with speed, MILLIPLEX Analyst offers great analytical power to researchers. Multi-plate data can be analyzed using a variety of curve-fitting options, including auto fit, to generate reports that feature fitting parameters and statistics. The dynamic range of the assay can be instantly determined using the software’s automatic calculation of minimum and maximum detectable effective concentrations. Finally, 21 CFR part 11 compliance allows users to meet the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) criteria for accepting electronic audit records in New Drug Applications.

MILLIPLEX Analyst complements Millipore’s MILLIPLEX MAP kits, the broadest selection on the market of analytes for multiplexing using the Luminex xMAP platform. In combination with Luminex instruments, Millipore now supports the entire multiplex workflow, from assay design all the way to data analysis. To learn more, visit the company article page.

Western BlottingWestern blotting equipment is used to transfer and identify specific proteins within a sample, reveal protein modifications, as well as give a semi-quantitative estimation of their concentration. Western blotting equipment includes all apparatus necessary to transfer proteins from gel to membrane and subsequent processing steps. Protein transfer can be performed by electroblotting with wet, semi-dry and dry transfer systems onto nitrocellulose and PVDF membranes. Blocking, washing and labeling of membranes follows, involving buffers, blocking reagents, blotting / incubation trays, labeling reagents, immunoblotting assays, antibodies and conjugates. Automated equipment for these steps is available to accelerate your lab workflow. Finally, detection and imaging of proteins can be conducted using gel documentation and imaging systems. ELISA often comes in kit format, with pre-selected antibody pairs to detect specific proteins or biomarkers of diseases such as diabetes and obesity, or cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Detection is made possible with chemiluminescent, fluorescent or colorimetric substrates and detection instruments such as microplate / ELISA readers. Other kits available include: Enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays for the quantification of protein-producing cells and chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA) kits. Data software can be used for math and stats, technical graphing and image analysis. In addition, software is available for specific data analysis of electrophoresis, densitometry, ELISA and DNA sequencing.Assay AssemblyAssay Assembly is technique used in drug discovery to develop assays to test the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, or other activities of a compound on a cell. Assay assembly requires chip assembly, a delivery system and a detection and analysis method. Beneficial features of assay kits or automated systems include high-throughput, high speed and sensitivity and low signal to noise ratio.Cell-Based AssaysCell-based assays are used to monitor the presence, quantity and activities of a desired cellular analyte including drug molecules or biomarkers. This can reveal information on cell health (apoptosis, cytotoxicity, viability and proliferation assays), cell metabolism, cell migration and cell signaling mechanisms.
