Product news

Outstanding resistance to aggressive and corrosive media and long service life are the key features of the new MZR 7255 micro annular gear pumps, recently introduced by pump specialists MICHAEL SMITH ENGINEERS. These hermetic sealed and chemically inert series of pumps utilise rotary micro annular gear technology which ensures precise dosage and low pulsation, so they are particularly suited to pharmaceutical applications where the trend exists for smaller, more efficient production lines.

For example, many pharmaceutical companies would manufacturer products in batches on larger production facilities, meaning equipment would be idle for longer periods. With the introduction of pumps like the MZR, smaller volumes of product can be manufactured without compromising accuracy and this has suited the demand for smaller manufacturing plants. As a result, smaller plants can be run continuously and this has helped maintain product consistency in addition to contributing to savings in space and running costs.

The MZR 7255 pump features rotors, bearings and shaft components made from materials such as ceramics and SSiC (sintered silicone carbide) and these materials, combined with a magnetic coupling, enable the pump to operate effectively in the most demanding fluids transfer applications.

Typical applications are varied and include; liquid sampling and micro-reaction in chemical engineering, dosing additives, spray technology, inks & paint dosing in production systems and DNA analysis and insulin dispensing in analytical and medical and biotechnology applications.
These compact pump’s measure just 146mm x 70mm x 72mm and weigh approximately 3300 grams. They incorporate a precision motor and easy-to use control functions and are designed for flows from 0.048 ml/min up to 288 ml/min and maximum system pressure of 80 Bar.

Combinatorial ChemistryCombinatorial chemistry, also known as combichem, is a technique used in drug discovery to create libraries of structurally related compounds. A library is generated by synthesis with a chemical reactor system or by computer-based modeling of compound combinations. When undertaking combinatorial chemistry consider reagents, buffers, resins and standards.Assay AssemblyAssay Assembly is technique used in drug discovery to develop assays to test the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, or other activities of a compound on a cell. Assay assembly requires chip assembly, a delivery system and a detection and analysis method. Beneficial features of assay kits or automated systems include high-throughput, high speed and sensitivity and low signal to noise ratio.High-Content ScreeningHigh-content screening (HCS), also known as high-content analysis (HCA), is a high-throughput technique used in drug discovery to identify substances that alter the phenotype of cells. HCS uses fluorescent microscopic imaging and automated image analysis to investigate cellular events such as apoptosis, cell viability, GPCR activation, oxide production, neurite outgrowth, and cell signaling. Biopharmaceuticals may be produced from cell lines, plants, or microbial cells. Important considerations of biopharmaceutical use include application, cost, production process and purification.PumpsLaboratory pumps are devices used to move liquids and gases by vacuum or positive displacement. The pressures/vacuums generated are determined by the type of pump used. High vacuum pumps include diffusion, ion, roots and turbopumps; for primary/medium vacuum applications see rotary vane pumps, scroll & diaphragm pumps. For the positive displacement of liquids explore a range of syringe and peristaltic pumps, as well as fluid aspirators.
