METTLER TOLEDO, a global manufacturer and marketer of precision instruments for use in laboratory, industrial and food retailing applications, has announced the launch of digital sensors with ISM® (Intelligent Sensor Management) technology, which helps reduce installation, maintenance, and calibration efforts for the sensors to a minimum - thereby improving process reliability, productivity, and system availability.

METTLER TOLEDO's digital sensors with ISM® technology are equipped with an integrated chip in the sensor head that stores all relevant sensor parameters and algorithms for enhanced sensor diagnostics. The sensor stores all relevant data to enable fast start-up when connecting it to a transmitter. In fact, when a connection is made, the sensor is automatically detected and the system parameterizes itself. For instance, when making adjustments, calibration data from the sensor is imported for adjustment purposes, and typical threshold values are set for the sensor diagnostics. The measurement signal is evaluated directly in the sensor, which then allows for a smooth transfer of all measured values from the sensor to the transmitter by means of a low-impedance signal.

The ISM® technology also allows for predictive maintenance. Its goal is to perform maintenance work only as often as necessary, i.e. to calibrate, service, and replace parts only when actually required. This necessitates a precise understanding of the behavior of sensors under a wide range of process conditions. With over 50 years of experience in manufacturing quality sensors for pH and oxygen measurement, METTLER TOLEDO has developed algorithms for predictive maintenance. This means that actual process conditions - namely pH value and temperature, among other measurements - are monitored continuously, allowing for a wear matrix to be established for a particular sensor. In essence, this simplifies diagnostics in the event of measurement problems, while also providing information about the timing of the next required calibration or adjustment, and the remaining lifetime of the sensor.

Calibration values and calibration history are stored in the integrated chip in the sensor head. This allows sensors to be pre-calibrated in the controlled environment of a maintenance shop or laboratory, and then stored ready for use. Essentially, this means that untrained personnel can replace sensors, while skilled lab technicians can concern themselves with using ISM diagnostic tools to determine whether and for how long the sensors can continue to be used following cleaning, conditioning, and recalibration - thus leading to improved process efficiency and resource optimization.

METTLER TOLEDO's digital sensors feature the industry-proven K8S connector, which has IP68 degree of protection, making it ideal for harsh, humid environments. Also, the measuring instrument used with the sensor, the M700 transmitter, allows integration of up to three modules for pH/redox, oxygen, and conductivity. The system is backward- and forward-compatible, meaning that transmitters with ISM functionality can also handle conventional analog sensors. Additionally, data transfer between the sensor diagnostics and transmitter can take place over long distances via a coaxial cable, due to the low-impedance signal that is used.

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners. Other meters can also measure the conductivity or dissolved oxygen content of a solution. pH meters, specific ion meters, conductivity meters and dissolved oxygen meters can come as benchtop or portable equipment. A meter’s electrodes can be replaced with easy to clean electrodes or electrodes for difficult media. pH, ion and conductivity meters are typically used in life science research, pharmaceutical testing, food and beverage, environmental and water analysis. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. Features of ph and ion meters to consider include temperature compensation, auto-calibration, adjustable resolution, measurable range and accuracy. Meters can be handheld, portable, benchtop and modular.TitrationTitration is an analytical technique for determining substance concentration in a solution. For titration consider a manual or automated system, volumetric or coulometric reagent addition and indication by a potentiometer, spectrometer, turbidometer or by the Karl Fischer method. Other features of titration to consider include burettes, reagents, concentration range, reaction time and autosamplers.
