The world’s most innovative and effective clinical laboratory and point-of-care technologies have been recognized at the SelectScience® Virtual Clinical Science Summit 2021. Winners of the 2021 Scientists’ Choice Awards® were announced live by SelectScience CEO Kerry Parker and Editor Dr. Lois Manton-O'Byrne to an online audience of industry leaders and healthcare professionals.

Now in their 14th year, the awards are unique in the industry as they are chosen by scientists. This year’s winning video ‘Controlling the impact of Vitamin D megadose therapy treatments for autoimmune disease’ is an interview with Dra. Cleide de Oliveira Weingrill Sabino, from DASA, São Paulo, Brazil.

In this video, produced in association with Siemens Healthineers, de Oliveira Weingrill Sabino discusses the analytical challenges presented by doctors prescribing high vitamin D doses to patients as a treatment for autoimmune diseases and the importance of carefully controlling doses to prevent hypercalcemia.

Clinical Editorial Article of the Year

This year’s winning article is titled ‘Limit of detection: The key to preventing false negative COVID-19 tests, regardless of patient viral load’ and features technology from PerkinElmer.

In this exclusive interview, Stephanie Dallaire, Principal Scientist for the Molecular Diagnostics group, discusses the current challenges of COVID-19 testing, the need for sensitive detection kits, and how limit of detection (LoD) affects COVID-19 testing and reporting.

This year’s winner of Clinical Webinar of the Year was presented by Wayne Dimech, Executive Manager - Scientific and Business Relations of the NRL, and Sten Westgard, Director Client Services and Technology for Westgard QC, in association with Technopath Clinical Diagnostics.

The webinar, titled ‘Maintaining Laboratory Quality Standards in an emergency: A COVID-19 case study’ and now available on demand, assesses the landscape for COVID-19 testing, considering the current methods, tests, and protocols and the state of regulations.
