Product news

Malvern Instruments' recent acquisition of Spectral Dimensions Inc. has added powerful NIR (near infrared) chemical imaging systems to the Malvern portfolio. The NIR-CI 2450 from this range will be on show at the 2006 AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition (29 Oct – 2 Nov 06; San Antonio, TX, USA).

The NIR-CI 2450, which incorporates the latest technology for chemical imaging, will be displayed alongside systems from Malvern’s extensive range of instruments and technologies for materials characterization. On the booth will be the laser diffraction-based Spraytec and Mastersizer 2000 particle size analyzers, the Morphologi G2 high sensitivity particle image analyzer for shape and size measurement, the Zetasizer Nano for characterizing nano-sized particles and molecules in solution, and the Gemini HRnano rheometer.

An exciting new analytical approach, chemical imaging enables the identification and spatial localization of chemical species in a sample, producing a 'chemical map'. By combining traditional near infrared spectroscopy with microscopic and macroscopic imaging, a single rapid measurement enables analysts to obtain quantitative spatial and spectral information with unprecedented ease.

In the pharmaceutical industry chemical imaging of solid dosage forms is used increasingly to determine: sample content uniformity; domain size characteristics; distribution of components (blending); polymorph distribution; moisture content; location of contaminants; coating and layer thickness.

Near Infrared SpectroscopyNear-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy measures the interaction of near-infrared light with a sample, including transmission, reflectance and absorbance, facilitating the identification of analytes. Measurements can be conducted using a Fourier-transform near infrared (FT-NIR) spectrometer, while there are also UV-Vis- NIR spectrophotometers that measure a broader spectrum of wavelengths. Applications of nanotechnology include medicine and medical devices, electronics, air and water purification, food science and energy production.RheometryRheometers are used to measure the rheology of fluids, which is the flow of fluids in response to an applied force. The most common types of rheometer include shear rheometers (capillary, cone and plate and rotational cylinder) and extensional rheometers. Viscometers are similar to rheometers however viscometers only measure the viscosity of a fluid.Particle CharacterizationParticle characterization instruments are used to determine particle size distribution, shape, surface area, zeta potential, density and porosity of particles and materials. Multiple tecchniques are available for determining particle size, shape and count including dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser diffraction, electrozone (Coulter technique), imaging particle analysis and single particle optical sensing. Determine the density of your material with a gas pycnometer or examine its surface area and porosity with gas adsorption analyzers and mercury porosimeters. Lab equipment for light microscopy includes confocal microscopes, fluorescence microscopes, zoom and stereo microscopes. Microscope slides and imaging reagents are available for visualizing samples, as well as various microscope stages and incubators for large or temperature-sensitive samples.
