Malvern® Instruments will exhibit the Zetasizer® Nano particle and molecular characterization system at L.A.B. (2-4 October 2007, ExCeL, London, UK) at Booth F06b and will also introduce visitors to the latest additions to the company’s range of particle characterization, rheology and chemical imaging systems.

Just introduced is a new low volume disposable polystyrene cuvette for the Zetasizer Nano S and ZS systems that enables the size measurement of as little as 40 microlitres of sample. This is less than half the volume possible with previous disposable cuvettes and is thought to be the lowest volume disposable cuvette available for any dynamic light scattering system. Such low volume and high sensitivity capabilities are especially important when analyzing biological materials where it is important to use the smallest amount of material possible.

Earlier this year the introduction of the new ‘chromatography flow-mode’ option for the Zetasizer Nano enabled the system’s use as an in-line chromatography detector for protein applications, conferring the ability to perform Absolute Size Exclusion Chromatography (ASEC). This allows protein size to be measured directly rather than relying on column calibration or additional data from a second detector, and means that molecular weight standards are no longer required to identify oligomeric species or determine protein purity.

Size Exclusion ChromatographySize exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a liquid chromatographic technique used to separate and identify molecules based on their size, including polymers, proteins, nanoparticles & nucleic acid. SEC is further subdivided into gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) when an aqueous or organic mobile phase is used respectively. HPLC-based SEC systems and columns are available for analytical separation alongside SEC spin columns or filters to prep samples for many protocols. The two major instrument classes are single-beam or double-beam spectrophotometers. More specialized equipment includes colorimeters, spectroradiometers and refractometers. Portable and microvolume spectrophotometers are also available. For the modular spectroscopy lab, explore a range of light sources for combination with a spectrograph/spectrometer and optics. Multiple tecchniques are available for determining particle size, shape and count including dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser diffraction, electrozone (Coulter technique), imaging particle analysis and single particle optical sensing. Determine the density of your material with a gas pycnometer or examine its surface area and porosity with gas adsorption analyzers and mercury porosimeters.
