Shimadzu, one of the world leaders in analytical instrumentation, has offered the lab4you student program for the sixth year to young scientists from all over Europe. By contacting Shimadzu, young scientists can apply for laboratory bench space for their own research. In the ultra-modern ‘Shimadzu Laboratory World’ at the European headquarters in Duisburg, Germany, new and well-serviced analytical instrumentation including HPLC/UHPLC, SFC, GC, and a wide range of other spectroscopy equipment (UV, IR, FTIR, ICP), as well as MALDI-TOF and material testing & inspection equipment to ensure the best possible analytical results.

“Our lab4you program supports young scientists pursuing their creative research approaches and generates results. They are starting their careers and maturing their professional developments; the lab space provided by us contributes to their innovations“, stated Björn-Thoralf Erxleben, Manager of the European Innovation Center.

Over the last years, candidates from Austria, Italy, Poland and Germany successfully applied for the free lab space. Where the topics of research submitted were particularly diverse and exciting, Shimadzu provided two lab spaces, rather than just one per year.” Projects included the investigation of new UHPLC MS-MS methods for battery research, metabolism of pharmaceuticals in plants, the fracture and fatigue behavior of carbon fiber reinforced plastics and the development of new methods for therapeutic drug monitoring.

The Lab4You-Program for young scientists is linked to the Shimadzu European Innovation Center, a collaboration with researchers all over Europe. Together with a number of European universities, it pursues new solutions for tomorrow with regard to new analytical methods, tools, techniques and software solutions.

In 2015, the first year of the program, Shimadzu promoted two researchers: Dr. Carola Schultz (at the time PhD student at Münster University, Germany) as well as Katarzyna Brama from Warsaw University, Poland. Carola Schultz highly recommends the lab4you program: “Due to the extensive research environment, providing a unique set-up to work with technologies and systems that are best suited to push one’s research projects. The laboratory staff is very supportive in introducing the functions of the instruments”. Carola Schultz now works as a Product Specialist for Consumables at Shimadzu.

LC-MSLC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) systems and equipment are used for separation and quantitative analysis of complex mixtures, combining liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Quantify proteins, contaminants, pesticides or screen for drug metabolites with a high level of sensitivity. LC-MS systems and equipment include reverse phase, normal phase and specialized columns integrated with various MS detectors such as time-of-flight (TOF), quadrupole, orbitrap or ion trap mass analyzers. LC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzer give greater sensitivity and resolving power to your analysis. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters.
