During the 3rd German Summit for medium-sized businesses at UNESCO World Heritage Zeche Zollverein in Essen, mentor Ranga Yogeshwar awarded this year’s Top-Innovators on June 24.

The “Top 100“competition has been thoroughly examining companies with the best innovation management in Germany for more than 20 years. The scientific team of Vienna University of Economics and Business prepares a list of the 100 most innovative companies in three size categories. In the end, a jury of renowned innovation experts from economy, science, media and politics chooses the winner.

In size category B (51 to 250 employees), Berlin-based laboratory equipment manufacturer KNAUER has made it to the top places in the "TOP 100“ ranking for the fifth time. In particular, the clearly defined innovation process with necessary test steps leads to a high goal transparency at KNAUER and has proven to be successful during the development of new products. To Dr. Marc Diener, head of hardware development, an innovation has only taken place if new ideas are implemented into products or applications. “It is important that an innovation actually creates a value for the customer, and that it is successful in the market.”, Diener explains.

KNAUER is one of the technology-leading manufactures of modern HPLC and UHPLC systems. The laboratory systems are used in research, development and quality control, e.g. in food, pharma or environmental samples. The family-owned business successfully stands its ground even against large competitors in highly specialized markets. Development and production of systems and software takes place in Berlin with 125 employees.

At this year’s German SME Summit – the 3rd SME summit – more than 1,000 decision makers of German companies exchanged their thoughts on topics like the digital transformation and business model innovation. In the evening, the most innovative SMEs were honored by the mentors Ranga Yogeshwar, a German physicist and well-known radio and television presenter, and Former Federal President of Germany Christian Wulff.

AutosamplersAutosamplers are automated sample loaders used with a number of separation and analytical techniques. HPLC autosamplers use automated partial or full-loop injection systems and place samples in vials or microplates for analysis. Autosamplers can also be used for elemental analysis. Features to consider include repeatability, syringe capacity, footprint and temperature controls.  Flash ChromatographyFlash chromatography is a fast-preparative column chromatography technique used for separation and purification of liquid analytes. Flash chromatography systems use small silica gel particles for separation and a pressurized gas for driving the solvent through the column or pre-packed cartridge. Gas chromatographs or GC systems include components such as GC columns, detectors, pumps and autosamplers. Choose from packed or capillary GC columns, flame ionization (FID), photoionization (PID) electron capture detectors and selective or non-selective detectors. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. Products to assist sample preparation include filtration equipment, evaporators, membranes and sieves.Size Exclusion ChromatographySize exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a liquid chromatographic technique used to separate and identify molecules based on their size, including polymers, proteins, nanoparticles & nucleic acid. SEC is further subdivided into gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) when an aqueous or organic mobile phase is used respectively. HPLC-based SEC systems and columns are available for analytical separation alongside SEC spin columns or filters to prep samples for many protocols. SFC systems require injectors, pumps, columns, ovens and detectors. The SFC retention method uses a supercritical fluid, usually CO2. There are a number of different SFC detector types including UV / VIs, ECD, mass spectrometry and fluorescence.Sample ManagementSample management systems include sample storage devices such as freezers and plate storers, sample environment enclosures and sample organization, retrieval and sorter systems. Useful system features include high-throughput, automation, robotic arms, automated liquid handling and associated database systems.
