Product news

Hudson Control Group introduces the VaryVac™, the first fully programmable robotically-controlled vacuum nest for filter plates used in DNA prep, protein purification, solid-phase separations and other microplate-based filtration.

The VaryVac™ has a unique combination of automated lid opening and sealing, precise closed-loop control of programmable vacuum levels as well as an on-board computer that controls and monitors vacuum ramp-up, hold level and ramp-down. It can be set to notify the user if a desired threshold vacuum level is not obtained, such as from a damaged plate rim or other causes for an incomplete vacuum seal. VaryVac™ enables users to completely avoid wasted or incomplete vacuum operations, saving thousands of dollars in valuable samples.

VaryVac™ can be loaded and operated manually, but is also compatible with robot loading systems from most manufacturers, including Hudson Control’s own PlateCrane EX®. It can also be used in-line with the Hudson Control LabLinx® high-throughput track system for unparalleled high-throughput and ease of use. VaryVac™ is powered by Hudson Control Group’s SoftLinx™ software, which makes it easy to interface with other automated instruments for seamless process control.

Microplate Readers / DetectorsMicroplate readers are used to automate the detection and analysis of labeled or label-free components in microplates during assays or live-cell monitoring. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. Consequently, the importance of high-quality DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment cannot be underestimated. Many purification kits are available and are typically optimized for nucleic acid type and source, including plasmid DNA, genomic DNA, mRNA, RNA and viral nucleic acid purification kits. Automated extraction and purification of nucleic acids can be implemented with magnetic bead separator instruments or high-throughput purification workstations. The purification process typically involves subcellular or membrane protein extraction with cell lysis kits, separation of proteins from cell debris by filtration or spin columns, and the isolation of proteins of interest from other proteins and impurities with affinity purification (including fusion protein tags and antibody binding proteins A, G and L), immunoprecipitation or chromatographic methods, such as ion exchange, size exclusion and immobilized metal affinity chromatography. All purification methods come in multiple formats for your laboratory needs, including agarose or magnetic beads, resins, columns and filter plates. Multiple formats are available for conducting SPE, including prepacked SPE cartridges, disks and microplates, as well as SPE sorbent powders for manual packing. SPE systems can be used to automate the process and extract multiple samples at once. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and supported liquid extraction (SLE) products are also available in the same formats.
