Product news

April sees the release of the first two models in Hoefer’s innovative new line of power supplies, featuring an Italian influence in their design.

The general-purpose 330V 400mA unit is the right choice for running electrophoresis units, while a 220V 2A model is aimed at blotting applications. State-of-the-art industrial design has led to a vertical format for the power supplies, saving valuable bench space in the lab. Each unit is programmable and features four sets of outlets.

Ramana Tadepalli, Director of Sales and Marketing, Hoefer, Inc., said, ‘These novel products are competitively priced and we expect them to have a significant impact in the market. The new range will be extended in the autumn with the launch of a number of high voltage units.’

For over 35 years Hoefer, Inc., the premier supplier of gel electrophoresis equipment and related products, has been recognised as an innovator. Today, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Harvard Bioscience, the company’s mission is to offer scientists high quality products that are intelligently designed and easy to use, yielding consistent and reproducible protein and nucleic acid electrophoretic separations. Hoefer, Inc. designs, manufactures and distributes an expanding line of instruments, accessories and consumables, and its distinctive products can be found in laboratories all around the world.

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners.
