Viscotek (www.viscotek.com) has announced that it will present its latest range of high performance detectors, software and systems for characterisation of polymers, proteins and nanoparticles at the forthcoming Analytica 2006 and Achema 2006 exhibitions in Germany.

Viscotek is the global leader in Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) / Size Exclusion Chromatography (SEC) detectors, software and systems for the characterisation of polymers, copolymers, proteins, protein conjugates and nanoparticles. In a single experiment, researchers can use Viscotek's unique and patented static light scattering, dynamic light scattering, viscometer, triple detector and tetra detector technologies to obtain absolute molecular weight, molecular size, intrinsic viscosity, conformation, structure, branching, aggregation and copolymer composition.

Visitors to Analytica stand A1.138 and Achema stand C19 (Hall 5.1) will have the chance to see and discuss Viscotek's market leading multi-detector GPC/SEC systems including the Triple Detector Array (TDA), the GPCmax and the latest revision of OmniSEC software. Viscotek triple detection systems, which employ a concentration detector, viscometer and light scattering detector operating in concert, are today the defacto standard for the characterisation of natural and synthetic polymers and proteins in the petrochemical, specialty chemical, elastomers, adhesives, coatings, food, agricultural, academic, pharmaceutical and biotechnology markets.

Also on display will be the Model 802 DLS with new OmniSize 2.0 software that includes a range of new features including a unique regularisation algorithm.. Offering superior sensitivity, resolution and accuracy, born out of Viscotek's exclusive single mode fibre (SMF) technology, the Model 802 DLS delivers leading edge results for applications including screening protein constructs for crystallisation, characterisation of colloidal and nanoparticulate drug delivery systems, protein conformation analysis and measuring the stability and size of lipids and conjugates.

Viscotek's innovative products and technologies are backed in Europe by superior technical service and analytical support from established offices in the UK, Netherlands, Germany, and France. Viscotek's European staff includes a broad and growing range of polymer chemists, engineers and software specialists, as well as an experienced sales and marketing force. Investment in experienced and knowledgeable staff has enabled the company to provide an unmatched level of service and support to customers across Europe.

Malvern Instruments acquired Viscotek in January 2008.

Size Exclusion ChromatographySize exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a liquid chromatographic technique used to separate and identify molecules based on their size, including polymers, proteins, nanoparticles & nucleic acid. SEC is further subdivided into gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) when an aqueous or organic mobile phase is used respectively. HPLC-based SEC systems and columns are available for analytical separation alongside SEC spin columns or filters to prep samples for many protocols. Cheminformatics focuses on compound information, whereas bioinformatics is mainly applied to analysis and modeling of genomics, genetic and sequencing information. Hardware and software is available for data acquisition, analysis, management and storage.NanotechnologyNanotechnology, or nanotech, is an engineering technique using molecular scale functional systems. Applications of nanotechnology include medicine and medical devices, electronics, air and water purification, food science and energy production.ViscometersViscometers are used to measure the viscosity of a fluid. Types of viscometer include rotational, vibrational and falling piston viscometers. Options for viscometers include modular, portable, benchtop and temperature compensation and density measurement features.Particle CharacterizationParticle characterization instruments are used to determine particle size distribution, shape, surface area, zeta potential, density and porosity of particles and materials. Multiple tecchniques are available for determining particle size, shape and count including dynamic light scattering (DLS), laser diffraction, electrozone (Coulter technique), imaging particle analysis and single particle optical sensing. Determine the density of your material with a gas pycnometer or examine its surface area and porosity with gas adsorption analyzers and mercury porosimeters.
