Porvair Sciences Ltd. has announced new additions to its selection of polypropylene microplates design optimised to provide a cost effective medium for sample collection or low temperature sample storage in a convenient 384-well format.

Available in three sizes (25µl, 125µl and 300µl well working volume) all Porvair 384-well storage / collection plates are manufactured to SBS/ANSI specifications. This standard footprint together with provision of handling lugs on the side skirt of the plate facilitates ready integration of the 384-well storage / collection plates with robotic handling systems. Significant sample handling productivity benefits are achievable as a result.

Manufactured from high purity polypropylene all Porvair 384-well sample storage / collection plates provide high solvent resistance minimising leachates and ensuring long-term sample integrity. Using a proprietary manufacturing technique Porvair's 384-well storage / collection plates offer market-leading flatness of only +/- 0.2mm. This tight tolerance assists secure plate sealing and significantly reduces mis-handling problems when used in automated environments.

Accommodating 384 alphanumerically labelled wells in a high precision microplate enables samples to be collected or stored and easily traced. Novel well bottom designs allow sipping probes to easily access and remove nearly all liquid contents. Built to economise freezer space, the 384-well sample storage / collection plates are stackable, have a raised well area to ensure leak proof sealing and may be stored for extended periods without deterioration in temperatures down to -80C.

Established in 1992, Porvair Sciences Ltd. expertise in microplate technology and manufacturing covers scientific fields including Life Sciences, Drug Discovery, Combinatorial Chemistry, Solid Phase Extraction, Protein Purification, High Throughput Screening, Proteomics and Genomics. Porvair Sciences Ltd. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Porvair plc.

MicroplatesMicroplates are multi-well plates used to increase the throughput of biological investigations. The number of wells microplates contain can range from 6 to 3243 wells, with the 96-well format being the most commonly used. Microplates can come tailored for a range of applications including cell culture, PCR, filtration, storage, non-binding surface, protein crystallization, as well as pre-coated, deep well and normal Standard microplates. Additionally, options for microplate colors include clear , black, white or black with clear bottom and white with clear bottom for absorbance microplate reader applications. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput.
