As part of a presentation at the recently held 8th International Conference of Clinical Laboratory Automation (the Cherry Blossom Symposium, 11-13 April, Seoul, Korea), invited speaker Dr Rodney Smith Markin discussed NoemaLife’s powerful new middleware solution for clinical laboratories – HALIA – and its ability to deliver improved efficiency, compliance and quality control to laboratories.

Dr Rod Markin is an internationally recognised pioneer and leading authority in the field of lab automation. In his role as David T. Purtilo Distinguished Professor of Pathology and Microbiology, Associate Vice Chancellor for Business Development, and Chief Technology Officer at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, he looks for new uses for information systems and works closely with different departments to plan major equipment purchases.

During his symposium presentation ‘Past, Present and Future of Laboratory Information’, Dr Markin noted the economic factors driving the move towards automation. Growing competition between clinical laboratories for a share of the diagnostics market, budget constraints, and pressure on staff numbers all play a part. He cited HALIA, with its powerful rule-based engine, as meeting the needs of laboratories by supporting open automation systems and offering a multi-lab mode.

Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines.
