Product news

BioTek Instruments repeats its continued support of the Association for Laboratory Automation with a gold-level sponsorship of LabAutomation2008, to be held January 27-29, 2008 in Palm Springs, California. At this event, BioTek will introduce two new products.

Synergy™ 4 Multi-Mode Microplate Reader with Hybrid Technology™ will represent the first in a new class of Hybrid Microplate Readers. Synergy 4 is the first and only multi-mode reader to combine filter-based and monochromator-based fluorescence detection technologies in one instrument for unlimited flexibility in current and future microplate-based assays. In addition to fluorescence intensity measurements, Synergy 4’s modular design allows detection of Fluorescence Polarization, Time-Resolved Fluorescence, Luminescence, AlphaScreen® and UV-Visible Absorbance for even greater versatility. BioTek, in partnership with Invitrogen Corporation, will present a technical poster entitled Fluorescence Intensity, FRET, and TR-FRET Homogeneous Assay Technologies from Invitrogen Validated on BioTek’s New Versatile Hybrid Microplate Reader, Synergy 4.

Additionally, BioTek’s new MicroFlo™ Select Dispenser offers a unique design with three interchangeable cassettes in varying sizes providing excellent performance in volumes from 1 µL to 10 mL. The peristaltic-driven dispensing and custom cassettes provide superior flexibility in liquid dispensing to many microplate and microtube styles and sizes. Both the Synergy 4 and the MicroFlo Select will be featured at the “Late Night with LRIG: Rapid-Fire Innovation Session”, to be held January 28, 2008 at the Wyndham Palm Springs Hotel.

The popular ELx405™ Microplate Washer and Bio-Stack™ Twister® II will be featured at BioTek’s booth as a component based automation system that can be modified to incorporate nearly any instrument combination needed for specific microplate-based applications. Components are easily adaptable to changing experimental protocols.

Details on BioTek’s products and technologies are available at Booth #443, as well as the article webpage.

Agilent BioTek ELx405 Select Deep Well Washer

Agilent Technologies

The Agilent BioTek ELx405 Select is the first deep well plate washer that aspirates and dispenses into 96- and 384-well deep well and standard height microplates. The ELx405 Select is available in several configurations to address a wide variety of plate washing applications, including ELISA and cell-based assays.

Genome AnalysisGenomics, the study of genomes, includes functional genomics, evolutionary genomics and comparative genomics. There are many genomic technologies such as DNA sequencing of whole genomes, computational biology and bioinformatics. DNA and nucleic acids must be isolated and concentrated from cells for analysis with kits, automated analyzers and software. Other useful technologies for studying genomics include PCR, microarrays and electrophoresis.Lab-on-a-ChipLab-on-a-chip (LOC) technology uses microfluidic chips, such as microarrays, to perform biochemical assays on a small scale. Benefits of lab-on-a-chip include the small volume of sample required as well as the speed of analysis. In selecting lab-on-a-chip devices consider the assay, cost, reliability, sensitivity and signal to noise ratio.ProteomicsProteomics is the systemic bioinformatics study of proteins and amino acids, including their structure, size, function and identification. Tools used in proteomics include chromatography, blotting and gels, protein arrays, mass spectrometry and ELISA and associated analysis software. Analyzers and proteomic systems should be sensitive, high resolution, fast and may be automated for high-throughput.High-Throughput ScreeningHigh-throughput screening (HTS) is an automated drug discovery technique for identification of active compounds against a compound library. Use HTS readers and integrated assay preparation / analysis workstations to screen your compounds. Identify active compounds against various HTS libraries, including membranes, proteins and peptides and HTS cell lines. Find the best high-throughput screening products in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Microplate Readers / DetectorsMicroplate readers are used to automate the detection and analysis of labeled or label-free components in microplates during assays or live-cell monitoring. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. Find the best microplate readers in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Assay AssemblyAssay Assembly is technique used in drug discovery to develop assays to test the cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, or other activities of a compound on a cell. Assay assembly requires chip assembly, a delivery system and a detection and analysis method. Beneficial features of assay kits or automated systems include high-throughput, high speed and sensitivity and low signal to noise ratio.Cell-Based AssaysCell-based assays are used to monitor the presence, quantity and activities of a desired cellular analyte including drug molecules or biomarkers. This can reveal information on cell health (apoptosis, cytotoxicity, viability and proliferation assays), cell metabolism, cell migration and cell signaling mechanisms.
