Advanced reviewer Roman Gritsenko, Element Materials Technology, shares insights into why he writes product reviews on SelectScience

Roman Gritsenko, a GC/MS specialist from Element Materials Technology, is a team leader for the gas chromatography group, with a main focus on GC/MS. In this role, Gritsenko’s time is occupied with various projects focused on extractables and leachables (E&L). E&L studies are becoming increasingly complex as part of the requirements before bringing drugs and similar products to market. Managing method developments, method validations and concurrent product testing for volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds by GC/MS can all form part of his day to day, but keeping ahead on all these workflows whilst keeping informed of new innovations can be challenging. In search of a simpler way to access product information and guide his future purchasing decisions, Gritsenko turns to SelectScience®.

What is the most innovative piece of lab equipment you use?

I regularly use single quadrupole GC/MS. The most innovative equipment I’ve used so far was ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS Q-TOF). It provides high performance separation of UPLC coupled with a time-of-flight MS detector and can be used for structural elucidation and unknown identification.

How do SelectScience reviews help you with your research/work?

With SelectScience reviews I get reliable feedback from the actual product user. Often vendors exaggerate the quality, reliability, or effectiveness of their products. Complex scientific equipment doesn’t work equally well for all applications. That is where a real user review is very helpful to see if the product would work for our purpose.

What inspired you to get into the world of science?

The science was always of interest to me since I was a child. I performed multiple experiments at home which often led to property damage. Chemistry was my favorite subject in high school. Chemistry is like magic but it's real. Learning more about chemistry is what inspired me to get into the world of science.

What would you like to achieve in your work?

Working in a contract research environment I strive to deliver the best results to our clients in a timely manner, while maintaining good science. Most of the time, I’m faced with tight deadlines but the goal to deliver good science always comes first.

What are you most excited about for the next 25 years in science?

Nowadays, technology and science change and evolve rapidly in a matter of years. The basic principles remain the same, but the new applications are amazing. I’m the most excited to see how far we can take the science to improve our quality of life. In 25 years, I should be thinking about retirement but maybe the advances in science would change that.

Ultra Inert Liners

Agilent Technologies

Agilent’s Ultra Inert Inlet Liners prevent adsorption and ensure accurate sample transfer onto the GC column through a robust deactivated surface. These liners are recommended for trace level analysis of active analytes. Liners with inert wool retain non-volatiles, prolonging column life and lowering frequency of MS source maintenance.
