Uniqsis has launched the first instrument on the market for multi-kilogram flow chemistry. FlowSyn MAXI, allows users to safely perform larger-scale flow reactions, at up to 100ml/min between –90ºC and 260ºC, and at pressures up to 1400 psi.

One of the major benefits of flow chemistry is seamless scale-up without
re-optimisation. However, output has previously been limited to hundreds of grams per day. Now, with the innovative FlowSyn MAXI, users are producing many kilograms in a day by utilising high flow rate pumps and large-scale coil reactors up to 40ml, with temperature-controlled static mixers essential for some reactions.

The robust and versatile FlowSyn MAXI offers a choice of flowpath, including Teflon, stainless and Hastelloy – so pumping nitric acid, sulphuric acid, BuLi, and even concentrated HCl in the Hastelloy system, is possible.

For low-temperature exothermic chemistry, FlowSyn MAXI can be coupled with the FlowSyn Polar Bear. This advanced cooling module has no circulator fluid or messy insulated tubing and incredibly fast cooling rates allow the Polar Bear to reach –90ºC from room temperature in less than an hour.

Uniqsis Managing Director, Paul Pergande, said: ‘Following requests from customers to push the scale of flow chemistry, we adapted the highly successful FlowSyn for larger-scale chemistry. The FlowSyn MAXI is truly the first instrument on the market to deliver mg to kgs production, and when coupled with the FlowSyn Polar Bear can operate down to –90ºC to run those highly exothermic reactions.’

PumpsLaboratory pumps are devices used to move liquids and gases by vacuum or positive displacement. The pressures/vacuums generated are determined by the type of pump used. High vacuum pumps include diffusion, ion, roots and turbopumps; for primary/medium vacuum applications see rotary vane pumps, scroll & diaphragm pumps. For the positive displacement of liquids explore a range of syringe and peristaltic pumps, as well as fluid aspirators. Biological materials used include cells, enzymes and organisms. Usually bioprocessing requires a batch or continuous bioreactor such as a fermentor or cell culture system. The advantages of using a reactor include high productivity, easy configuration, adjustable values and automation.
