Product news

febit biotech gmbh contracts with Sigma-Aldrich Chemie GmbH Deutschland as a partner for its product platform GENIOM.

Sigma-Aldrich is one of the largest suppliers of bioreagents and research chemicals for pharmaceutical and laboratory applications. The company agreed to produce special DNA building blocks and solvents for febit´s GENIOM platform. These are supplied as a kit that includes all reagents for rapid and flexible synthesis of DNA oligonucleotides in the biochip, the core component of the GENIOM instrument. In addition, Sigma-Aldrich will provide worldwide logistics for GENIOM chemicals. The cooperation was initiated in January 2006.

"Our cooperation with Sigma-Aldrich ensures maximum product quality. Thus, we are able to provide GENIOM users with highest-grade chemicals and the worldwide logistics of a market leader," comments Cord F. Stähler, president & CEO of febit biotech gmbh.

"We are glad to support febit´s innovative GENIOM technology with our synthesis reagents. Conversely, this cooperation will enhance our activities in molecular biology and novel genetic technologies," adds Thorsten Ebel, Sales and Marketing Manager Biotechnology of Sigma-Aldrich.

The companies currently prepare an extension of their cooperation to reagents for sample preparation.

Both companies present themselves on the Analytica trade show in Munich (April 25-28, 2006). febit biotech gmbh displays its technology in hall A3, booth 195.

Genome AnalysisGenomics, the study of genomes, includes functional genomics, evolutionary genomics and comparative genomics. There are many genomic technologies such as DNA sequencing of whole genomes, computational biology and bioinformatics. DNA and nucleic acids must be isolated and concentrated from cells for analysis with kits, automated analyzers and software. Other useful technologies for studying genomics include PCR, microarrays and electrophoresis.Lab-on-a-ChipLab-on-a-chip (LOC) technology uses microfluidic chips, such as microarrays, to perform biochemical assays on a small scale. Benefits of lab-on-a-chip include the small volume of sample required as well as the speed of analysis. In selecting lab-on-a-chip devices consider the assay, cost, reliability, sensitivity and signal to noise ratio.OligonucleotidesOligonucleotides are small nucleic acid polymers, usually less than 20 bases in length. Oligonucleotides can be made via enzymatic cleavage or more commonly by chemical synthesis with polymerases. Their use includes FISH, southern blots, microarrays and as primers in PCR. High fidelity synthesis kits and detection systems are available for easy production and detection, respectively.DNA / RNA Extraction and PurificationPurified DNA and RNA are required for numerous downstream molecular biology applications. Consequently, the importance of high-quality DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment cannot be underestimated. Many purification kits are available and are typically optimized for nucleic acid type and source, including plasmid DNA, genomic DNA, mRNA, RNA and viral nucleic acid purification kits. Automated extraction and purification of nucleic acids can be implemented with magnetic bead separator instruments or high-throughput purification workstations.
