Exhibiting at the recent Miptec 2006 - Micronic BV - a leading supplier of traceable sample storage solutions, presented its latest innovative products for compound storage and retrieval in the drug discovery environment.

At this important international meeting considerable interest was shown in the Auto Decapper - an automated instrument that accelerates the time consuming and tedious process of removing caps from sample storage tubes. Easy to install and operate the Auto Decapper automatically removes and disposes of the caps from a full 96-tube rack in less than 10 seconds. Not only does the Auto Decapper increase productivity but it also reduces the possibilities of sample cross-contamination with an integrated cap disposal device to ensure that caps are not reused.

The show marked the European debut of Cryotube - a novel screw top tube range designed to ensure simple and high integrity storage of samples even at -180C. Incorporating a novel 'single turn' screw cap mechanism - repetitive access to and high integrity closure of samples for cryopreservation is a simple and rapid process. Unique tube coding and compatibility with Micronic code reader's facilities easy integration of the new Cryotube range into automated high-throughput screening environments. Other products that drew particular attention on the well-visited Micronic stand included a new 384-well tube rack to be launched later this year.

Reflecting upon the show, Remi van Liempt (Micronic - product and applications manager) commented 'Despite the close proximity of Miptec to Analytica we were pleased to receive good enquiries from several big international Pharma companies plus leading scientists and decision makers from the Basel region'.

Dedicated to the design and production of innovative sample storage tubes, accessories and instruments over the last 25 years, Micronic is uniquely able to offer laboratories the expert advice to help them safeguard one of its most valuable assets - its samples.

MicroplatesMicroplates are multi-well plates used to increase the throughput of biological investigations. The number of wells microplates contain can range from 6 to 3243 wells, with the 96-well format being the most commonly used. Microplates can come tailored for a range of applications including cell culture, PCR, filtration, storage, non-binding surface, protein crystallization, as well as pre-coated, deep well and normal Standard microplates. Additionally, options for microplate colors include clear , black, white or black with clear bottom and white with clear bottom for absorbance microplate reader applications. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput.
