EMD Millipore, the Life Science division of Merck KGaA of Germany, will have an especially strong presence at this year’s Pittcon conference and exhibition. The newly combined organization provides hundreds of products for analytical analyses including sample preparation tools, columns, chemicals, and laboratory water systems. EMD Millipore will introduce:

• A new filtration system for faster, easier chromatography sample prep
• Innovative information management software for lab water systems
• An expanded range of monolithic silica capillary HPLC columns

Product demonstrations and technical presentations at Pittcon 2011 include:

Millitrack™ Lab Water Information Management Software

Millitrack software is a web graphical user interface tool for EMD Millipore water purification system users. The new software enables long-term electronic archiving of water quality records, as well as remote access to a water purification system for real-time remote monitoring.

In the interest of full traceability, Millitrack software allows users to save monitoring data from their water purification system on a long-term basis, including resistivity/conductivity measurements, TOC levels, and system parameters. Records that are archived and indexed using Millitrack software can also be exported to a database file that has a data management tool, e.g., LIMS, ECM/SDMS, or ELN.

Milli-Q® Integral System for pure & ultrapure water

The Milli-Q Integral system includes a comprehensive and optimized sequence of water purification and monitoring technologies in a single unit, allowing both pure and ultrapure water to be produced directly from tap. It provides pressurized, bacteria-free water through E-POD (Elix-Point-of-Delivery) units and Milli-Q ultrapure water through Q-POD (Quality-Point-of-Delivery) units.

It features convenient water delivery with space-saving dual POD dispensers, and reduced running costs/water waste, thanks to Elix® technology.

Technical Presentations

UHPLC and HPLCHigh performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and ultra high performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC), also known as UPLC, are analytical techniques used to separate, identify and quantitate components of complex mixtures including biological samples such as proteins and lipids as well as chemical mixtures of pesticides, drugs and oils. Both techniques are liquid chromatographic methods but differ by operating pressures (HPLC < 6000 psi < UHPLC ). Components of HPLC and UHPLC systems include columns, detectors, pumps, autosamplers and column heaters. Explore a range of UHPLC and HPLC columns for your specific sample needs including reverse phase, normal phase, ion exchange, HILIC, ion exclusion and size exclusion columns. For more specialized HPLC, explore FPLC, countercurrent LC and simulated moving bed systems. Quantify proteins, contaminants, pesticides or screen for drug metabolites with a high level of sensitivity. LC-MS systems and equipment include reverse phase, normal phase and specialized columns integrated with various MS detectors such as time-of-flight (TOF), quadrupole, orbitrap or ion trap mass analyzers. LC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzer give greater sensitivity and resolving power to your analysis. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. FiltrationFiltration and microfiltration are used to separate solids, particulates or large molecules from fluids (liquid or gases) in order to purify the filtrate. Explore a range of filter formats, including filter paper, plates and membranes for your separation needs. While larger particulates may be separated by gravity filtration, smaller particulates may require additional force for timely separation. Microfiltration equipment includes vacuum filters, as well as positive pressure, crossflow and centrifugal filtration devices. LIMS can be a standard for common lab workflows, such as commercial off the shelf systems (COTS), or customized for more specialized lab use. Systems are available for mainframe computers or PC.Labware and Lab SuppliesLabware and lab supplies include various forms of glassware, plasticware, reagents and personal protective equipment (PPE) and are used across all scientific laboratories, enabling daily tasks to be performed. Explore a range of flasks and beakers, petri dishes, carboys and storage bottles. Labware such as condensers, desiccators and burettes are also available for more specific tasks. This can be done in large quantities or small. Preparative chromatography systems are usually low to medium pressure liquid chromatographs that are semi-automated. Explore a range of preparative columns and fraction collectors. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. The nano refers to the very low flow rate of the mobile phase in the system. The advantage of nanoLC is its high sensitivity. Often the system is integrated with a mass spectrometer in nano LC-MS or nano LC-MS/MS. When using nanoLC equipment consider column choice, software and accurate and precise flow rate control.Software PlatformsSoftware platforms are useful for various stages of laboratory experiments from data collection to data storage and processing. For instance lab software is available for system control, data management, data analysis and qualification / validation.Electronic Laboratory NotebooksElectronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs) are becoming increasingly popular for documenting experimental processes and for lab data management. An ELN is informatics software which can be biology specific, chemistry specific, cross-disciplinary or web-based. Advantages of an electronic lab notebook include increased data protection, efficiency and straightforward data searching and sharing.Water PurificationThere are a number of water purification methods available to remove contamination from laboratory water. These systems include demineralization, reverse osmosis, filtration and ultrafiltration. A combination of methods is sometimes necessary to achieve purified water suitable for use in experiments.
