Computype, Inc., a global leader in labware identification, announces the introduction of the Spirit® 2100 Portable Printing System at Lab Automation 2008 taking place in Palm Springs, Calif., Jan. 27-30. The battery powered, portable device provides thermal transfer printing for permanent labels that can be used in a variety of laboratory applications including the labeling of tubes, vials, plates and slides.

The Spirit 2100 Portable Printing System provides labs with an affordable and high quality alternative to handwritten labels that are often illegible or deteriorate with time. The handheld device can be used anywhere in the lab, saving time and easing the process of creating permanent, customized labels when and where they are needed. Featuring “What You See is What You Get” label design, the Sprint 2100 also allows the user to see the actual label as it is being created to ensure accuracy and improve efficiency.

“As a portable labeling solution, the Spirit 2100 saves valuable time in the lab. The user isn’t tethered to a computer and can create and apply customized labels wherever they are working,” said Eric Roach, marketing manager, Computype, Inc. “Using a thermal transfer process, the Spirit 2100 ensures a permanent and high quality label every time which makes it an attractive alternative to labs that are still handwriting labels.”

Roach says the Spirit 2100 is not only easy to use but it greatly improves accuracy by allowing the user to preview the label before printing. As the user types the label information, the text is displayed on a LCD screen and shows an outline of the actual label. The user can easily change text sizes, import graphic images or change fonts to complete the label design. Once finished, the user chooses from several print sizes before printing.

The Spirit 2100 can be synched to a PC to download data files from Excel and other Windows compatible databases. There is also an edit logging feature will keep track of printed labels and download printed information back to PC.

Microplate Readers / DetectorsMicroplate readers are used to automate the detection and analysis of labeled or label-free components in microplates during assays or live-cell monitoring. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. Useful system features include high-throughput, automation, robotic arms, automated liquid handling and associated database systems. Accessories in sample management include barcode scanners, heat sealers and tubes.
