Lab product reviews can change the world by helping other scientists find the best equipment to accelerate their vital work. Here at SelectScience®, we are dedicated to promoting peer-to-peer communication that will make the difference - but we couldn't do it without our esteemed reviewers. In this regular new feature, we put the spotlight on some of our most dedicated and impactful reviewers and find out what inspires them to keep sharing their knowledge with the global scientific community.

In this week’s Reviewer in the Spotlight, Dr. Ritesh Bhole, associate professor at Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, reveals how reviews, whether positive or negative, have significantly impacted his purchasing decisions for his lab.

Tell me about your role and your current research

I am currently working as an associate professor at Dr. D. Y. Patil Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research, Pimpri, Pune. My current projects focus on drug design and discovery to search for lead molecules for the treatment of cancer.

How does SelectScience help you with your research?

I see SelectScience as one of my colleagues. It gives me lots of information about current research, new instruments launched, special features, and much more. The information available is trusted and genuine. I can gather vital information related to my research and come to know what my fellow scientists are doing. It also gives me the chance to attend webinars in emerging areas. The team at SelectScience is always ready to help in any matter in this regard.

What inspired you to get into the world of science?

I love to convert ideas into innovations. Since my childhood, I have always been curious to ask questions on how and why. This curiosity inspired me to make my career in the field of science.

I see SelectScience as one of my colleagues. It gives me lots of information about current research, new instruments launched, special features, and much more.

Who is your hero in science and why?

The man who inspired me a lot and my hero in the field of science is Albert Einstein, the German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theory of relativity, one of the two pillars of modern physics. His entire life is truly motivational to any young scientist to achieve excellence in research.

Why is communication vital in science?

Communication is the vital key in the field of science. Science thrives as scientists interact more efficiently. Science is increasingly interdisciplinary, and collaboration and creativity are fostered by the capacity to communicate more effectively across disciplines. Being able to communicate their ideas and discoveries at each step makes the knowledge more accessible to mankind.

Why do you think lab equipment reviews are important?

As reviews come directly from the end users, positive or negative remarks can significantly impact on purchasing of new equipment for research. A detailed review of the product also helps me to find the correct product that suits our area of research.

What would you like to achieve in your work? I would like to find the most effective medicine for the treatment of cancer, that is targeted with minimal side effects and affordable to all.

LC-MSLC-MS (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) systems and equipment are used for separation and quantitative analysis of complex mixtures, combining liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Quantify proteins, contaminants, pesticides or screen for drug metabolites with a high level of sensitivity. LC-MS systems and equipment include reverse phase, normal phase and specialized columns integrated with various MS detectors such as time-of-flight (TOF), quadrupole, orbitrap or ion trap mass analyzers. LC-MS/MS instruments equipped with a qTOF or triple quadrupole analyzer give greater sensitivity and resolving power to your analysis. Find the best LC-MS equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Mass SpectrometryMass spectrometry (MS) is a powerful analytical technique used to identify and quantify molecules based on the mass-to-charge ratio of gas-phase ions. It provides detailed information about the structure, composition, and properties of compounds and is widely used across fields such as environmental monitoring, materials science, drug discovery and development, food and beverage testing, and wider chemical research. Key MS techniques include tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LS-MS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS). Choosing from these wide range of techniques and technologies can be a daunting task, so keep up to date with scientific applications, performance expectations, and customer reviews here all in one place. Visit our product directory to receive quotes direct from the manufacturer. NMR and EPR SpectroscopyNuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is used to resolve the local chemical environment of atomic nuclei with spin, revealing information on molecular structure, dynamic processes and chemical reactions of organic molecules, from proteins to synthetics. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) also known as electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is used to detect and quantify paramagnetic species in a sample, including free radicals as transition metal ions. By immersing the sample in a strong magnetic field, both NMR and EPR spectrometers probe the sample with either radio waves or microwaves respectively. A range of benchtop, solid-state and time domain NMR spectrometers & EPR spectrometers are available, as well as NMR tubes, NMR solvents, software, coils, and magnets. Find the best NMR & EPR equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Cellular PathologyCellular Pathology deals with the microscopic analysis of tissue samples and cells. Sample preparation and processing includes fixation, staining, sectioning and slide mounting, using equipment such microtomes and cryostats. In choosing immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry kits, consider chromogens, staining method, antibodies, microscopes and imaging.Protein PurificationProtein purification is a vital step in drug discovery, therapeutics, biotech and life science research. The purification process typically involves subcellular or membrane protein extraction with cell lysis kits, separation of proteins from cell debris by filtration or spin columns, and the isolation of proteins of interest from other proteins and impurities with affinity purification (including fusion protein tags and antibody binding proteins A, G and L), immunoprecipitation or chromatographic methods, such as ion exchange, size exclusion and immobilized metal affinity chromatography. All purification methods come in multiple formats for your laboratory needs, including agarose or magnetic beads, resins, columns and filter plates. Find the best protein purification equipment in our peer-reviewed product directory: compare products, check customer reviews and receive pricing direct from manufacturers.Protein CrystallographyProtein crystallization is the process of crystallizing purified proteins for 3D structure analysis by x-ray crystallography. The main methods of protein crystallization include sitting drop, hanging drop and microbatch. It is important to control parameters such as pH, temperature and concentration. Following crystallization, detectors and software are used for data collection and analysis.Biopharmaceutical AdvancesBiopharmaceutical advances follow the development of pharmaceuticals derived from biotechnology, also known as biotechnology medicines. Biopharmaceuticals may be produced from cell lines, plants, or microbial cells. Important considerations of biopharmaceutical use include application, cost, production process and purification.Clinical ChemistryBiochemistry (or clinical chemistry) involves the analysis of bodily fluids using chemical tests. Techniques used include HPLC, chromatography, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, immunochemical, electrophoresis, turbidometric / spectrophotometric assay, MRI and ISE analysis. Tests are often carried out on plasma or serum but urine (urinalysis) and fecal specimens are also processed.Clinical GeneticsMolecular Genetics covers the analysis of hereditary genetic disease and chromosomal abnormalities.
