Cleaver Scientific reports that its horizontal electrophoresis equipment is being used on the frontline of the UK fight against Ebola.

The Cleaver Scientific MultiSUB electrophoresis system features in a recent ITV report on UK Government plans to step up Ebola screening of passengers arriving from West Africa at Heathrow and Gatwick airports as well as major rail terminus.

At the Porton Down research center in Wiltshire, UK - scientists are working on detecting and minimizing the risk of the Ebola virus appearing in the UK. Currently researchers are analyzing 10-15 blood samples / week taken from National Health Service (NHS) patients, all to date have proved negative for Ebola.

Mr Adie Cleaver, Managing Director of Cleaver Scientific commented "Ebola hemorrhagic fevers are difficult to diagnose because early signs and symptoms resemble those of other diseases, such as typhoid and malaria. If doctors suspect you have an Ebola infection, they can use Serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) and ELISA or PCR blood tests to quickly identify the virus". He added "Ebola testing has to be carried out by specialists. Samples from patients are an extreme biohazard risk and laboratory testing is conducted under maximum biological containment conditions in centers such as Porton Down with full facilities for infection control".

A long-established technique, horizontal gel electrophoresis offers many advantages for nucleic acid separation, and remains today one of the mainstays of molecular biology. The multiSUB™ horizontal gel electrophoresis system from Cleaver Scientific has been designed by scientists for scientists. With its advanced features, each unit provides an easy to use, versatile and flexible system that can evolve and adapt with the changing needs of today’s laboratory researcher.

multiSUB Mini Duo

Cleaver Scientific Ltd

The multiSUB Mini is the smallest unit in the multiSUB range, designed for low to medium numbers of samples. The small gel size maximises run economy but does not compromise versatility as two tray options are available – 7 x 7cm and 7 x 10cm, and combs ranging from preparative up to 16 samples. Simply by altering the gel tray or comb, this compact unit is capable of resolving up to 64 different samples, prepping 1ml of sample or separating sample bands over a distance of 9cm. The multiSUB Mini Duo is sold complete with both 7 x 7cm and 7 x 10cm UV Trays, plus 2 x 8 sample combs, loading guides and dams.

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments.
