Product news

Cleaver Scientific will be displaying its latest innovations in Gel Electrophoresis at ARABLAB 2016, to be held 20-23 March 2016 at the Dubai International Convention & Visitors Centre in the United Arab Emirates.

Visitors to Stand 354 will be able discuss and have a demonstration of electrophoresis and related products, including the revolutionary Safe” series of electrophoresis products, the OmniPAGE VS20WAVE-DGGE - a versatile Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis (DGGE) system and the new Horizontal Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (hPAGE) system.

The 'Safe' Series of products from Cleaver Scientific were designed to make DNA electrophoresis procedures safer, more convenient and more economical to run. Eliminating the need for Ethidium Bromide and UV light, runSAFE is a completely safe stain for DNA gel electrophoresis. runVIEW® is an innovative system which can be used to maximize the efficiency of DNA recovery from stained gels by minimizing the number of steps involved in post-electrophoretic purification. runDOC is a benchtop gel documentation system which sits above the gel tank and enable multiple real-time images of the process to be taken.

Modular in design the OmniPAGE VS20WAVE-DGGE system and its wide range of accessories allow laboratories to effortlessly switch between different mutation detection techniques, thereby maximizing throughput and screening efficiency. The system is compatible with microplates and thermal cycler blocks enabling 96-sample throughput which alleviates many of the bottlenecks associated with screening for DNA mutations.

The new hPAGE system’s horizontal format allows for a large number of samples to be run simultaneously and combines this with the greater resolution of polyacrylamide compared with agarose. A key advantage of the system is that it is very simple to pour and cast gels which takes away some of the complexity normally associated with vertical gel casting.

hPAGE-SET

Cleaver Scientific Ltd

Cleaver Scientific announces the introduction of a horizontal polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (hPAGE) system developed in collaboration with the Kirkhouse Trust, an organisation supporting research and education in the biological sciences.   Whilst vertical systems are commonly used for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, this newly developed unit’s horizontal format allows for a large number of samples to be run simultaneously and combines this with the greater resolution of polyacrylamide compared with agarose.  The model is based on the published work of Izzo et al (2006). The main advantage of the system is that it is very simple to pour and cast the gels which takes away some of the complexity normally associated with vertical gel casting.

omniPAGE Modular Systems

Cleaver Scientific Ltd

The omniPAGE range of Modular Vertical Gel Systems allow multiple electrophoresis techniques to be performed in the same unit. Using the same main tank and lid, three different inserts are interchangeable for slab gel, tube gel and electroblotting techniques. These systems are available in three size options, Mini 10 x 10cm, Mini Wide 20 x 10cm and Maxi 20 x 20cm and are available as individual, combination or complete modular systems. Combination and modular systems offer maximum value and space and have the added benefit of increased consistency which results from using the same universal base and lid.The systems include all modules and accessories required for Slab Gel Electrophoresis, 2-D Electrophoresis and Electroblotting. The central component is the omniPAGE Mini Vertical unit, Mini Wide Vertical Unit or omniPAGE Maxi Vertical unit. These include a rapid and intuitive casting system, enhanced and easy to set up cooling system and have increased capacity; they can run up to four gels per run. In addition, the omniPAGE Tube gel module is capable of resolving up to 10 first dimension gels and the Electroblotting module has a three blot capacity.

Capillary ElectrophoresisCapillary electrophoresis (CE) is used to separate molecules based on charge, size and hydrophobicity. Pressure, voltage or a vacuum is used to introduce the sample to fused silica capillaries. Fluorescence, UV/Vis, UV or diode array detectors are used to visualize components. Types of CE systems include capillary electrochromatography (CEC), capillary zone electrophoresis and capillary gel electrophoresis. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications.
