The SelectScience Seals of Quality

SelectScience® is proud to announce the latest recipients of the new SelectScience Seal of Quality program, recognizing the products that have consistently received the highest review ratings. This program was launched in June this year to further assist scientists in making important purchasing decisions.

What is a Seal of Quality? The Seal of Quality program recognizes products that have consistently received the highest review ratings and aims to help scientists make the best purchasing decisions for their laboratories. Seals are allocated in line with strict criteria based on the quantity of reviews a product has received and their average rating. There are four levels: Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze.

Seals of Quality are assigned to approximately 0.1 % of products on the SelectScience website and are allocated in line with strict criteria based on the quantity of reviews a product has received and the average rating of those reviews.

The program has been hailed by industry leaders and described as providing “invaluable” information for scientists.

The people who matter

The top-rated products which have gained Seals of Quality are used in important research right across the scientific spectrum, but they all have one thing in common — the scientists using them love them.

“We are thrilled to announce the latest recipients of this successful new program and would like to congratulate them on their achievement – being recognised for an exceptionally high quality product by the people who matter — their customers,” said SelectScience Editor-in-Chief Kerry Parker. “We have been delighted by the response to the Seals of Quality which help scientists see at a glance the top-rated products on the market – in the eyes of their peers. By providing such valuable information to scientists around the world and valuable feedback to manufacturers, this is another big step forward in our ongoing quest to help accelerate successful laboratory work.”

Among the manufacturers celebrating their new Seal of Quality this month is Wyatt Technology Corporation, which becomes just the fifth manufacturer ever to pick up a Gold Seal of Quality.

On receiving news of the Gold Seal of Quality, Dr. Philip Wyatt, CEO, Wyatt Technology Corp., was quick to thank the company's customers. He said: "Our company is most grateful to our customers, who kindly endorsed our instrument and whose endorsements resulted in news of this remarkable award and achievement."

Among those celebrating when the program was launched back in June was sequencing services provider GATC Biotech, which became the very first recipient of a SelectScience Platinum Seal of Quality, which was awarded to its both LIGHTRUN and its SUPREMERUN. GATC’s head of marketing & communications, Detlef Janssen, said: “We are incredibly excited to receive this honor not just from SelectScience, but also from the reviewers who take the time to go on the website and leave their feedback. The Seal is especially important to us, as it serves as peer validation of the quality of our Sanger sequencing services.”

Meanwhile, Phenomenex, a global leader in analytical chemistry, scooped a Seal of Quality for its Kinetex Core-Shell HPLC/UHPLC Columns. President of Phenomenex, Shane Lyons, said at the time: “This Gold Seal of Quality reflects our focus on customer satisfaction and the fast pace at which we are able to bring innovative technologies to market.”

Seal of Quality recipients are selected quarterly and dated by the year in which they are attained. Click here to see which 28 products were allocated a coveted Seal of Quality when the new program was launched in the summer.

ElectrophoresisElectrophoresis equipment is used to separate mixtures of protein, DNA or RNA, based on their electric charge, size and other physical characteristics, by passing them through a medium such as a polyacrylamide gel, an agarose gel or a capillary tube. Electrophoresis equipment includes horizontal and vertical gel electrophoresis chambers, isoelectric focusing systems, 2D electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis instruments. Precast gels with a gradient can be used or gels can be hand cast. Samples are run alongside ladders or markers to identify the approximate size of a molecule. Separated proteins and nucleic acids in the gel can be stained or probed with fluorescent markers and then imaged and detected using gel documentation instruments, transilluminators, densitometers and scanners. Select specific antigen reactivity, high specific affinity, low non-specific binding, monoclonal or polyclonal, primary or secondary antibodies and associated conjugates such as an enzyme or dye for visualization.Western BlottingWestern blotting equipment is used to transfer and identify specific proteins within a sample, reveal protein modifications, as well as give a semi-quantitative estimation of their concentration. Western blotting equipment includes all apparatus necessary to transfer proteins from gel to membrane and subsequent processing steps. Protein transfer can be performed by electroblotting with wet, semi-dry and dry transfer systems onto nitrocellulose and PVDF membranes. Blocking, washing and labeling of membranes follows, involving buffers, blocking reagents, blotting / incubation trays, labeling reagents, immunoblotting assays, antibodies and conjugates. Automated equipment for these steps is available to accelerate your lab workflow. Finally, detection and imaging of proteins can be conducted using gel documentation and imaging systems. Consequently, the importance of high-quality DNA/RNA extraction and purification equipment cannot be underestimated. Many purification kits are available and are typically optimized for nucleic acid type and source, including plasmid DNA, genomic DNA, mRNA, RNA and viral nucleic acid purification kits. Automated extraction and purification of nucleic acids can be implemented with magnetic bead separator instruments or high-throughput purification workstations.
