Ceram has recently invested in GPC (Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), a technique which enables the molecular size distribution of polymers to be determined.

Steve Newman, Product Manager, Testing at Ceram says:
“GPC allows us to both characterize polymers and understand their performance, something which our clients in the healthcare sectors, in particular medical device, bone cement and packaging manufacturers, need to develop new products and improve existing ones.

This technique is particularly useful in the analysis of polymer wear and degradation, helping our clients to understand why their products may be failing.”

Size Exclusion ChromatographySize exclusion chromatography (SEC) is a liquid chromatographic technique used to separate and identify molecules based on their size, including polymers, proteins, nanoparticles & nucleic acid. SEC is further subdivided into gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) when an aqueous or organic mobile phase is used respectively. HPLC-based SEC systems and columns are available for analytical separation alongside SEC spin columns or filters to prep samples for many protocols. It is widely used in fields like biochemistry, pharmaceuticals, and environmental analysis. By exploiting differences in the interaction of substances with a stationary phase and a mobile phase, chromatography enables precise purification and quantification of compounds. Whether you're working with complex biological samples or industrial chemicals, chromatography is essential for obtaining high-quality results. Natural polymers such as DNA and proteins are essential to life, whereas synthetic polymers such as polystyrene and polyethylene are used widely due to their functionality. Typical techniques for analysis include GPC, SEC, DSC, FT-IR and NMR.
