For National DNA Day, on April 25 2023, people from all over the world will commemorate not only the 70th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA double helix structure, but also the 20th anniversary of the successful completion of the Human Genome Project[1].

National DNA Day is an annual, global celebration that was started by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) to commemorate the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003, as well as the discovery of the DNA double helix in 1953[1].

The discovery of DNA gave rise to modern molecular biology, and “opened the door to the next-generation era of molecular pathology,” shares Prof. Umberto Malapelle, Chair of Predictive Molecular Pathology Laboratory and Scientific Secretary of the International Society of Liquid Biopsy. “Nowadays, by using the information coming from DNA sequencing we are able, in clinical practice, to better diagnose and to better define the therapeutic decision-making process,” explains Prof. Malapelle. “In other words, we are able to transfer in practice the Precision Medicine strategy for our patients.”

The importance of the discovery of DNA is echoed by Dr. Chris Whelan, Director, Neuroscience, Data Science & Digital Health, Janssen Research & Development, LLC. “The discovery of DNA has allowed us as humans to reconstruct our own blueprints,” states Dr. Whelan. “It has allowed us almost quite literally to hold the copy of the code that makes us who we are in the palms of our hands.”

Since the launch of DNA Day, NHGRI has been encouraging organizations to host events celebrating DNA Day throughout January-May of each year. As we mark two milestone anniversaries in 2023, it is the perfect opportunity to learn and celebrate the latest advances in genomic research and explore how those advances impact our lives.


We've learned so much already about the starting point in the central dogma of biology, the DNA. Over the next 10 years, I'm most excited about how we will study the products of DNA in greater detail on a much larger scale.
