Carl Zeiss Showcase the Use of Microscopy in Dentistry with Educational Partnership

The Carl Zeiss Medical Technology business group announces a new educational partnership, showcasing the use of microscopy in dentistry. Through this partnership, Carl Zeiss has equipped 23 work stations within the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine’s new Syngcuk Kim Endodontic Clinic with surgical microscopes. Carl Zeiss also supports Penn Dental Medicine’s international continuing education programs.

A special dedication of the new clinic, which opened for patient care in January, was held on March 1. "This collaboration will enable us to clearly demonstrate the many practical benefits of microscopy to future dentists during their training. This will allow us to build awareness and advance microscopy within this relatively young market over the long term," says Dr. Ludwin Monz, President and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG.

Carl Zeiss has outfitted Penn's new endodontic clinic with ZEISS OPMI® pico or OPMI® PROergo surgical microscopes. This facility is the teaching clinic for the postdoctoral students in Penn Dental Medicine’s graduate dental education program in endodontics as well as the training center for the Department of Endodontics continuing education programs in microsurgery.

"You can only treat what you can see," says Dr. Syngcuk Kim, the Louis I. Grossman Professor of Endodontics at Penn Dental Medicine, who over the past 20 years has established Penn's Department of Endodontics as a leader in the integration of the operating microscope into conventional and surgical endodontic education and practice. The illumination and magnification of the surgical microscope have made it a vital tool in modern endodontic education and practice. "Microscopy is the key to more quality and reliability in dentistry," adds Dr. Ludwin Monz.

Carl Zeiss also supports Penn Dental Medicine’s international continuing education programs through a hands-on program as part of the Penn Endodontic Global Symposium, held in Korea in 2010, Germany in 2011, Japan in 2012, and most recently in India in February 2013.
