Brooks Automation, Inc., a leading worldwide provider of automation, vacuum, and instrumentation solutions for multiple markets, today announced the presence of its Brooks Life Science Systems division at the inaugural Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS) Conference in San Diego, CA.

Brooks Life Science Systems is the leading worldwide provider of automation solutions for compound and biological sample storage and management with an installed global base of more than 180 systems, including installations at the world’s top 20 pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

Dr. Steve Schwartz, President and CEO of Brooks Automation, said, “Brooks entered into the Life Sciences market in 2011 and now, with the acquisitions of industry specialists RTS Life Science, REMP®, and Nexus Biosystems, we have chosen the prestigious SLAS Conference to rollout our full offering to the Life Science industry. In Brooks Life Science Systems we combine the expertise and experience of these three leading sample management companies, alongside the extensive R&D capabilities and global service reach of Brooks Automation.”

“This is an exciting time as we continue to build on our long term commitment to supporting life science research,” commented Clint Haris, Senior Vice President, General Manager, Brooks Life Science Systems “As pioneers in automation, we are wholly committed to focusing our R&D activities on pushing the boundaries of automated sample management and storage. Our mission is to continuously provide innovative solutions that improve sample integrity and data security during automated sample storage and management, as well as advancing the operational performance and efficiencies of our systems.”

At the conference, Brooks Life Science Systems showcased the latest solutions in automated storage and its portfolio of products designed to meet the most demanding needs in sample management including its most recent product acquisitions, Celigo® and Plate Auditor™. Celigo is a high throughput, microplate-based, imaging cell cytometer and analysis system. Celigo provides high productivity automated solutions for the analysis, handling and testing of biological and compound samples prior to and following their storage in automated sample management systems. The Brooks Plate Auditor will help Compound Sample Managers analyze the quality of their compounds following storage and prior to the sample’s entry into the high throughput screening phase of the drug discovery process.

MicroplatesMicroplates are multi-well plates used to increase the throughput of biological investigations. The number of wells microplates contain can range from 6 to 3243 wells, with the 96-well format being the most commonly used. Microplates can come tailored for a range of applications including cell culture, PCR, filtration, storage, non-binding surface, protein crystallization, as well as pre-coated, deep well and normal Standard microplates. Additionally, options for microplate colors include clear , black, white or black with clear bottom and white with clear bottom for absorbance microplate reader applications. Useful system features include high-throughput, automation, robotic arms, automated liquid handling and associated database systems. Accessories in sample management include barcode scanners, heat sealers and tubes.Flow Cytometry / Cell CountingFlow cytometers are used to count, sort and examine multiple characteristics of cells. Other cell analysis equipment includes image cytometers, cell counters, fluorescence-activated cell sorters (FACS), magnetic-activated cell sorters (MACS), and a range of flow cytometry assay kits. Flow cytometers can reveal information on cell viability, cell proliferation, apoptosis and cell cycle progression, as well as identify cell populations and intracellular or cell-surface molecules. Additionally, some flow cytometers, known as FACS, have an additional sorting function after analysis. Cell counters and image cytometers count live and dead cell populations and can also conduct cell proliferation assays.
