SCIENION AG and BioVendor Laboratorni medicina a.s. today announced that BioVendor is using SCIENION’s complementary product portfolio for the production and detection of immunoassays.

Czech Republic Brno-based BioVendor Laboratorni medicina a.s. produces and distributes medical equipment and medical research products for international markets. In its Research & Diagnostics Products division, BioVendor focuses on developing and manufacturing in vitro diagnostic and research-use only immunoassays, antibodies and recombinant proteins. The company has begun developing its immunoassays using SCIENION’s integrated product portfolio including consumables such as sciPLEXPLATES, the sciFLEXARRAYER dispenser configured with both sciPICO and the new sciDROP NANO option, as well as the sciREADER CL for detection of assay results.

Dr. Viktor Růžička, CEO of BioVendor Laboratorni medicina a.s., comments: “Miniaturization and automation are key to our immunoassay production and the sciFLEXARRAYER has proven itself to be a state-of-the-art instrument for precise low volume liquid handling. We use it for developing new multiplex tests in microtiter plates to offer our customers cost-effective tools for parallel analytics. First application examples are multiplex IVD tests for the detection of borrelia infections as borreliosis can become a severe disease if not diagnosed early.”

Růžička also mentions another reason for choosing SCIENION technology: “We are spotting sensitive biological materials such as antigens and antibodies. Temperature is one of the factors that can have an impact of the functionality of these molecules. For us it is an important benefit of the sciFLEXARRAYER that the spotting head does not produce heat – especially as we manufacture tests in large quantities. Furthermore, SCIENION offers a cooling unit for source plates and targets.” And finally he appreciates that SCIENION provides complete solutions for the automated production and detection of immunoassays because this facilitates work flow and enables advanced performance as products optimally complement each other.

Dr. Holger Eickhoff, CEO of SCIENION AG, states: “BioVendor has become a leading manufacturer of immunoassays for a wide range of applications. The company is known for many innovative products that are unique to the market. We are very pleased that BioVendor has selected SCIENION equipment for assay development and production. From the very start of our collaboration, BioVendor utilizes almost the complete range of our integrated product portfolio. I am confident that this decision will pay off for the company.”

AntibodiesAntibodies are used in techniques such as confocal and fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, ELISA, ELISPOT, immunohistochemistry, western blotting and immunopreciptation. Select specific antigen reactivity, high specific affinity, low non-specific binding, monoclonal or polyclonal, primary or secondary antibodies and associated conjugates such as an enzyme or dye for visualization.ELISAEnzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA), also known as enzyme immunoassays (EIA), are used for the detection and quantification of proteins, peptides and antibodies in a sample. ELISA often comes in kit format, with pre-selected antibody pairs to detect specific proteins or biomarkers of diseases such as diabetes and obesity, or cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Detection is made possible with chemiluminescent, fluorescent or colorimetric substrates and detection instruments such as microplate / ELISA readers. Other kits available include: Enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assays for the quantification of protein-producing cells and chemiluminescent immunoassays (CLIA) kits. The number of wells microplates contain can range from 6 to 3243 wells, with the 96-well format being the most commonly used. Microplates can come tailored for a range of applications including cell culture, PCR, filtration, storage, non-binding surface, protein crystallization, as well as pre-coated, deep well and normal Standard microplates. Additionally, options for microplate colors include clear , black, white or black with clear bottom and white with clear bottom for absorbance microplate reader applications. Tools used in proteomics include chromatography, blotting and gels, protein arrays, mass spectrometry and ELISA and associated analysis software. Analyzers and proteomic systems should be sensitive, high resolution, fast and may be automated for high-throughput.Microplate Readers / DetectorsMicroplate readers are used to automate the detection and analysis of labeled or label-free components in microplates during assays or live-cell monitoring. Microplate readers are generally distinguished by their mode of detection. Types include absorbance, luminescence, fluorescence intensity, fluorescence polarization, TRF / FRET and multimode microplate readers. Microplate readers deliver a high throughput of samples by reading multiple wells simultaneously, with the 96-well format the most commonly used. As a result, microplate readers are often used in the drug discovery, bioassays, research and pharmaceutical industries for screening applications. Microplate loading can also be automated, with robotic microplate stackers to increase throughput. Microorganisms are a useful research tool as genetic vectors and, in immunology, for antibiotic susceptibility testing, cellular biology and genetics. Microorganisms commonly grow readily in incubators with microbial culture media; this can contain chromogenic supplements to differentiate between cell lines. Estimate your culture’s density of microorganisms with colony counters, or screen and select colonies for desirable clones with automated colony pickers. Additionally, equipment is available to monitor environments for the presence of microbes and identify with microbial identification instruments.
